Tell me if you feel related to this:
You like helping people. You like learning. You would like to grow in your career.?
You don’t create content.
Many people want to grow in their career, but not many are willing to create content. Why? Because it involves making an effort, but most importantly, getting exposed and being questioned and criticized. But the truth is that the benefits of creating content outweigh by far the possible drawbacks (if I can call them that).?
Of one thing you can be certain: creating content helps you grow professionally. Let’s see why.
The benefits of creating content
- It helps you establish presence and become an authority on your subject. By sharing your knowledge and experience, you let people know what you know, and thus, gain trust. If people know and trust you, chances are they will come to you for help. That way, you can grow your network, which is the best investment you can make for your career.?
- It encourages you to keep on learning, and therefore, improving professionally. When you post something, you have to make sure you know what you are talking about. You need to do research and do your best to learn as much as you can about the topic. It’s always a good idea to prepare well, so that if someone asks you a question, you know how to answer. The more you learn about your area of expertise, the more you will grow professionally.
- It allows you to get an insight into other people’s perspectives, which translates into learning more about the subject. When you post something, chances are people will comment. Sometimes they will add to what you said, and some other times they will disagree with you. In both cases, you will learn from them. When someone disagrees with you, you face the challenge of understanding why the other person thinks in such a way, and it will probably encourage you to do some research. You don’t know what you don’t know, and receiving other people’s comments allows you to become aware of that. Accessing other people’s perspectives is always an enriching experience.
- It helps you foster relationships. When people react or comment on your posts, a social interaction takes place. You never know who your post will reach. It can be seen by your contacts and by people who are not connected to you. You can start a conversation with a new person, which is always beneficial because you get to know someone new, access? a different perspective, maybe get to know a new company, and expand your network. You can start a conversation with someone you know well, and make the relationship stronger. Imagine going to a party where nobody has anything to say. Everybody is there, standing up, in silence. What’s the point of the party? It does not make any sense. Something similar happens here: what’s the point of being there if you have nothing to say? Say something, and start a conversation. Relationships are a treasure.
- It guides you towards opportunities you didn’t even know existed. This goes hand in hand with getting to know people and fostering relationships. Each person you know and form a relationship with opens a door to a world of possibilities. So, the more people you know, the more opportunities you will have. Opportunities do not only refer to jobs. Different people will expose you to different cultures, topics, news, ideas and perspectives. In other words, by creating content, you attract people. The more people you know, the more opportunities you will get.
- It makes you happier. It is well-known that helping others makes people happy. A way of helping others is sharing knowledge and experience. In the physical world, you can donate money, food, and clothing, for example, and in the virtual world, you can share knowledge and expertise. Content adds value to the community. Remember: creating content is not only about yourself (establishing presence, gaining knowledge, expanding your network, etc.), but about helping other people. It’s a win-win.??
I know nothing worth sharing
Do you feel you have nothing to share? Do you think you are not knowledgeable enough to share content? Well, think twice. It is common to underestimate our knowledge: to think that what we know is not enough, or that it is irrelevant. But the truth is that we don’t know what other people know. Maybe we think our knowledge is basic, and that nobody would be interested in something so simple. But what we think is so simple or obvious, may be completely new or complex for someone else. Maybe by sharing this knowledge, we would help a lot of people. Remember: something may be easy, simple and obvious for you, but not for others.?
How can you create content?
- Writing posts
- Writing articles
- Making videos
- Supporting someone else’s post (giving it a like, commenting and sharing it)
- By creating content, you benefit yourself and others.
- What you think is too simple and obvious, may be new and complex for others.
- It’s not about promoting yourself, but about adding value to the community.?
So… What can you share to add value to the community? What knowledge and experiences can you donate?
?Leave fear behind. You never know how your content can impact someone else’s life.
