Taking a moment to look back on your career halfway through can be quite insightful. It helps ensure you're heading in the right direction and making choices that resonate with your personal goals and values. So, here are six friendly questions you might want to ask yourself during this reflection:
- Am I genuinely happy with what I'm doing day-to-day? Take a closer look at your current role and see if it still brings you joy and a sense of fulfillment. Are you excited about your daily tasks? You can't be excited about everything but most things... most days...you can be at least happy with.
- Have I ticked off the goals I set for myself earlier on in my career? Think back to the goals you had when you started your career. Have you achieved them, or have they transformed into something else? If the answer is yes, set some fresh, achievable goals.
- Are my skills still up-to-date and relevant? Answer this honestly. Check if your skill set is keeping pace with the changes in your field and the world around you. Do you need to pick up any new skills to stay competitive? If so, do so.
- Do I have a clear sense of where I'm headed in my career? Consider whether you can see a clear path ahead. Are you moving towards your long-term goals, or do you need to adjust your course a bit? Maybe a mentor or career coach here could be helpful.
- How's my work-life balance holding up? Reflect on the balance between your work and personal life. Is it working for you, or do you need to make some tweaks to prioritize your well-being and personal interests? It's okay if it's not balanced right now. This is your time to reflect and change accordingly.
- Am I making a meaningful impact in my job and industry? Think about the influence your work has on your organization and the industry as a whole. Are you making a positive difference, and how can you amplify that impact moving forward and are you satisfied with the route it is taking.
