The 6 Principles of Effective Coaching for Leaders

The 6 Principles of Effective Coaching for Leaders

You might be quite familiar — and likely quite at ease — with the concept of a visiting leadership coach. It's often simpler to offer leadership guidance to an audience you're not intimately acquainted with. Hence, these leadership experts exude confidence. However, what if you're tasked with coaching a subordinate or a colleague within your own organization?

Is coaching someone you interact with daily an insurmountable challenge?

Apply these six fundamental principles for leadership coaching to guide someone from a nearby office or cubicle:

1. Establishing a Supportive Environment:

Begin by establishing a secure and encouraging, yet challenging, environment. Everyone benefits from having their perspectives challenged occasionally. However, if not accompanied by sufficient support, challenges can be detrimental, diminishing trust and morale.

Providing safety and support entails ensuring individuals feel heard, and their feelings and values are acknowledged. This builds trust, fosters honesty and openness, and helps your coachee feel psychologically secure at work. Your responsibility is to create an environment where taking risks is seen as rewarding rather than risky.

Maintain an open and nonjudgmental attitude, and convey your support to the coachee while evaluating their knowledge and skills. (This forms the basis of our Assessment – Challenge – Support (ACS)? framework; keep ACS in mind to ensure you provide necessary support along with accountability.)

2. Coaching According to Their Agenda:

Remember, this coaching session isn't about you, so let the coachee determine which goals to focus on and how to enhance them. While it's advantageous when the coachee's agenda aligns with the organization's goals, avoid imposing your personal priorities on the relationship.

When it's evident you need to emphasize a point, wear your managerial hat — preserving the unique collaborative coaching relationship you're diligently building.

3. Facilitating Collaboration:

Similar to Socrates, who guided his students through questions, the best coaches refrain from offering direct answers or assuming the role of an expert. In coaching conversations, concentrate on the coachee's needs, refraining from injecting the dialogue with your personal anecdotes and theories.

While you can propose multiple options for addressing a problem, the ultimate decision should rest with the coachee, with you serving as a facilitator and collaborator.

4. Promoting Self-Awareness:

Aim for your coachee to grasp their strengths and current weaknesses — an essential skill for any effective leader. Likewise, comprehend how your coaching behaviors impact those around you. Exhibit self-awareness, fostering a similar self-awareness in your coachee. You may also share strategies to enhance self-awareness.

5. Learning from Past Experiences:

Encourage learning from experience. Most individuals can evolve and improve only if they encounter the right set of experiences and are open to learning from them. As a coach, consistently guide your coachee to reflect on past events, analyzing what worked well and what didn't.

Promote experiential learning and using experiences as a catalyst for development, ensuring your student continues to progress well beyond the conclusion of your sessions.

6. Modeling Leadership Principles:

Finally, exemplify what you coach. This, the last of the six core coaching principles, maybe the most challenging to embody, as it requires implementing outside of the coaching session the leadership lessons you've been endeavoring to convey.

?And remember, if you feel unequipped to coach on a specific issue, direct your coachee to someone more experienced — perhaps someone who, we hope, applies the six core leadership coaching principles even more effectively than you do.
