6 Personal Branding and Visibility Lessons Female Leaders can Learn from Kamala Harris

A few weeks ago, President Joe Biden sent ripples across the political world when he stepped down from his 2nd term presidential bid to support his Vice President Kamala Harris for the highest seat in the land.
Since then Harris has come out swinging. Raising $200 million in donations in her first full week as the likely Democratic nominee for president, reportedly, shrinking former President Trump's lead in the polls and giving highly articulate speeches which have seen her favourability climb particularly with young voters.
Regardless of your preferred politics there are lessons to be learned, and some of them centre on branding and visibility.
Here are my top 6:
1. Be ready
Many women will find themselves in a similar position, thrust into the leadership spotlight and sometimes with little warning. This means at all times we must be equipped and ready. See yourself, now, as a leader and use your time outside the spotlight to prepare for the opportunities that you desire or may fall in your lap.?
2. Define your narrative early
Many have commented on how Harris’s first few speeches were used to create an image- quickly seeking to establish a reputation before her opponents had too much of a window to define her. Thereby taking a lead on owning her narrative in what will likely be a tough campaign. For female leaders, it is essential that we understand our value and own the narrative of our brands. What do you want to be known for? Understand that and communicate it.?
3. Leverage digital media?
Harris choosing Beyonce’s Freedom as her campaign song is no coincidence. It was a calculated branding strategy. According to AP, “Democrats across the board have been saying freedom is at stake,” Thus Kamala is associating her campaign with a literal call for freedom and a reminder that that’s what’s at stake.
When it comes to branding and messaging, simplicity for the audience is key. Using a popular song, from a popular artist when young and first time votes are at stake in this digital media age, is poignant. Female leaders should learn to leverage digital media in their leadership and visibility strategies and harness the power of digital platforms to amplify their voice.

4. Leverage story telling
In 2019, the New Yorker christened Kamala, “the best storyteller on the democratic stage” and her 2020 victory speech where she shared her journey to being elected Vice President and painted a picture of all who helped pave the way before her resonated personally with many. Female leaders should leverage storytelling to build connections and memorability. Share your challenges, victories, and vision.
5. Build and leverage strong powerful networks
No matter your political opinion, the fund raising efforts for Kamala has taken many by surprise. This has quite likely been fuelled by a robust network of supporters and influencers. No matter how icky networking might feel, female leaders must find authentic ways to cultivate and nurture relationships. A strong network is crucial for visibility and opportunities.
6. Build mental resilience
Just like Kamala, female leaders face uphill struggles on their leadership journey. Many will think you are unqualified, a diversity hire, or have been a friend of ‘luck’, to get to where you are. But what matters most is what you believe about yourself.?
Which of these lessons resonated the most with you?

3 个月Extreme Liberal Kamala denies she was ‘border czar’, but the videos of Joe giving her the job say otherwise. There's a video of her saying “The border is secure”. That's one of those lies where everyone looks at each other and thinks, Wow what a shameless and undisguised liar. Are we to forget what we saw and know to be true? Electing Kamala would be a more even more liberal and disastrous extension of a failed administration: The border, middle class crushing Harris/Biden inflation, and inept foreign policy. Trying to circumvent the Supreme Court and pay off student loans. Thank God the appellate court put an end to that bit of criminality. She can't run on her accomplishments because she doesn't have any. So, she resorts to the vilification of Trump and J.D. Her new buzzword and talking point is "creepy"; I find that odd coming from her; Have you seen her incomprehensible word salad speeches? She and the democratic machine will take speeches out of context and lie. That's the party's mandate, anything goes -no lie too big, no deed too despicable. Didn't Kamala tell us Joe was a robust man? Another one of those bald-faced lies. She covered up for quite some time. Just one lie after another
