Post-Harvest Harvest Losses in Africa
Post-harvest losses are a major challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa.?
Contributing factors to Post-harvest losses include:
- Lack of adequate basic infrastructure and facilities for storage and transportation.
- Limited availability of suitable varieties for processing.
- Lack of appropriate processing technologies.
- Lack of skills & capacity of farmers.
Post-harvest losses declines with:?
- Better market access (check out our idea here)
- Post-primary farmer education
- Sufficient infrastructure & facilities
- Possibly improved storage practices backed by technology.
Innovation will be the key driving force to assuage post-harvest losses in Africa. But raising awareness and making these innovative technologies accessible and affordable can make all the difference.
Startups like Complete Farmer, Farmerline, Twiga Food, BES Veggie, FreshLINE Post Harvest Solutions, AkoFresh and Agrisolve Ghana are working to tackle this challenge. Institutions like SESI Technologies also support farmers with innovation in tackling post harvest losses.
