6 mistake mid-level managers are making and why you’re not getting promoted!

Are you getting great feedback from your stakeholders, are one of the top performers in your team and always delivery your work over and above what is expected??

Yet, every time there is a promotion in your department, you're never considered.

And you are left absolutely baffled as to why!

All you are left with are feelings of frustration, anger and feel like you just aren't valued for what you do and how hard you work?

Unfortunately, the system we were raised in (i.e., the school system) has set us up for failure for how the corporate world rewards hard work.

Hard work does not alone does not equal a promotion!

Here are 6 common mistakes that high performers in middle management positions are making and why you’re not getting that promotion.

1. No one in decision making roles knows who you are.

You are so focused on your work that you have blinkers on.? And perhaps going out for drinks after work or office parties isn't your thing. BUT, if you want to build your brand and get in front of the people in your department that are of influence, then you need to up the anti when it comes to networking and building those relationships!

2. You aren't 'playing the game'

Now, I hate office politics as much as the next person, but the reality of the corporate landscape is, that the higher you move into senior management roles, the more you get involved.? So, lean into it, and find a way to play the game that is still within your values and authentic to you.

3. Don't be modest

Again, it's something that has been ingrained in our upbringing (especially in Australia), is the tall poppy syndrome.? Don't get too big for your boots or no one will like you.? But, in order for your work and talents to be recognized you need to start promoting yourself to your senior managers (don't expect your boss will do this).? Where appropriate, incorporate this into conversations you have with the management team and demonstrate the great work that you have been doing and the results you have been getting.

4. You're too good at your job.

I know, this sound contradictory.? But let me explain.? If you are so good at your job, and make your bosses job easy, why would they want to lose you.? To avoid this, make sure you validate any feedback and use this as reason why you’re out growing your currently role and it's time to move on.

5. Your boss is threatened by you.

When you are a high performer, you run the risk of people feeling threatened, and your boss is likely one of them.? They could be giving your average scores and always picking on something even though you have exceeded expectations.? If you think this could be the case, find a mentor outside your department to become your advocate and be your cheerleader when it comes to a promotion.

6. Things are happening outside your control.

This could look like a company restructure looming, budget restraints, headcount freeze.? If you can't wait this out, then it may be time to look elsewhere for opportunities.

If any of these points resonate with you, don't beat yourself up, you were probably oblivious to the fact that these things were working against you.? But remember this, know your worth, know you value and never settle for anything less than that.??

And if that means looking outside your organization for promotion opportunities, then do what is right for you!
