When was the last time you sat by a quiet pond and reflected on what actually makes you happy?
In our busy day to day lives, we often forget how to be happy and this in time puts us under extreme stress and can even lead to unhappiness and depression.
But the interesting thing about being happy as human beings is actually quite simple. It doesn’t take a lot to be happy and cheerful all the time.
Remember the statement, “We find joy in the smallest things of life,” well guess what, that’s true for most of us and research has proved this over and over again.
So how can you be happy all the time, (or at best, most of the time)?
In this article, I will share with you, 6 strategies that you can use to boost up your happiness at this moment.
Let’s begin!
Curiosity Is the Secret Key
The great scientist and physicist, Dr. Albert Einstein once said, “curiosity is what makes us happy” and this is true for every relationship we have in our lives.
Be it with our spouse or partner, or be it with our friends, our curiosity can become the secret ingredient that fuels our happiness.
But how exactly can curiosity help us in being happy?
Take for example, that you are sitting and unwinding with a group of friends. You are talking and discussing about various topics and in between, you guys touch upon a topic that is very interesting to everyone.
In this situation, ask your friends what are their thoughts on this matter. No matter what their answer might be, your show of curiosity into their opinions will help you make the relationship stronger.
Another worthy example, is asking your spouse after a long day, how they are feeling?
A simple question like this can often lead to endless conversations, at the end of which both of you will know each other better and thus end up making your relationship stronger.
Research has proved that sporting an active and curious mind in social gatherings is a sure enough strategy to increase the level of Dopamine in your brain, which is the chemical responsible for making you happy.
Humour Can Be Your Savior
Often in our day to day busy lives, we come across a lot of strenuous, stressful and challenging situations and while we might not always be the best at handling or managing them like a pro, we can always take a step back and take a look at the lighter side of things.
Britain’s biggest comedian Ricky Gervais once said that, everything in life is worth a laugh.
And thus even in the toughest of situations, try to look at the lighter side of things and maybe smile to yourself.
Smiling is a very powerful trigger for your brain to release a high amount of Dopamine and that is exactly what you need to be happy instantly.
When There Is Life, There Is Hope
A lot of times, when something bad happens to us and we lose hope in everything around us. Be it a bad breakup or a friend lying to us, or simply not meeting our work goals. Whatever might be the case, we end up loosing hope.
But you should always know deep in your heart that there is hope.
Hope is the process of finding the will and the way, and it is an agency that will make you happier and more positive in the long run.
Research has shown that people who are more hopeful, show better performance at work, school, college and life in general.
No matter how worse the situation might be, always know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and you just have to have hope in order to reach there.
SWOT Analysis
In business and management studies a well known tool of analysing if an idea is worth pursuing or not is SWOT Analysis.
In the most basic terminology, it involves listing down your key strengths and weaknesses on a piece of paper and then weighing the pros and cons.
You can use the same strategy with your own life, but with a twist.
Take a piece of paper and write down your 2 biggest strengths and then write down 7 ways in which you can make use of them this week, to make you a better person.
Don’t go into the weakness and weighing the pros and cons part yet; its use will come later.
By writing down 2 of your biggest strengths and following it up with a list of ways you can use them, you will be able to better analyse the situation in hand and start a thought process of ways in which you can make it better.
No matter how small the solutions are, and how big your life problems are at the moment, you can always use this strategy to be a little happier everyday and research has proved that this technique works.
Spread Your Love
Love in today’s times doesn’t only mean loving your partner or spouse. It means the process of enlightening and making the lives of people happier in whatever way possible, be it small or big.
Make it a point to respond to people with warmth and care, when they share something with you. No matter how small the information might be, make an effort to show that you care and encourage them to share more with you.
This will not help you make the person happier, but also help you be friends with them. And research has shown that, more the number of good friends we have, the happier we are.
Break the Cycle
No matter how much our life changes every moment, one thing that always remains constant is the monotony that comes with work and other household tasks. And this monotony in the long run makes us bored and even unhappy.
A little known secret to a happier and more productive life, is to break this cycle of monotony from time to time.
While at work, take a small break and go out for a walk. During this walk, make it a point to energise yourself and find ways to make yourself happy.
You can use the same strategy at home. Break the monotony once in a while and maybe go for a short vacation.
Do something out of the ordinary, that will make you happy and I am sure you will find your secret key to happiness.
