Employee engagement is a term that explains the level of commitment, motivation, and enthusiasm that employees have towards their work and the organisation they are affiliated with.
Employees who are enthusiastic and committed to their job tend to pursue the organisation's good with vigour and it always reflects in how customers are treated, which in turn gives the organisation a good reputation among its target market.
As business leaders, we can learn valuable lessons from how Jesus Christ turned 12 men into "engaged employees", passionate enough to give their lives to ensure that the organisation's vision spreads unhindered.
A well-thought-out employee engagement strategy will encourage team members to take ownership and look for innovative ways of achieving the organisation's overall goals.
Here are six employee engagement lessons from Jesus Christ with scriptural references:
1. Clearly Communicate Your Values:
Most business leaders mistake the organisation's vision for its values. Simply put, a vision outlines the long-term aspirations, goals, and objectives of a business.
On the other hand, values refer to the principles and beliefs that guide and shape the culture and behaviour of an organisation.
They form the moral and ethical standards that a company stands for, and they influence how the company operates, interacts with stakeholders, and makes decisions.
Jesus was clear in his communication of the Kingdom's values, which is love.
...Love?the?Lord?thy?God?with?all?thy?heart,?and?with?all?thy?soul,?and?with?all?thy?mind,?and?with?all?thy?strength:?
This?is the?first?commandment. And?the?second?is?like,?namely?this, Thou shalt?love?thy?neighbour?as?thyself.?There?is?none?other?commandment greater than these - Mark 12:30-31
On one occasion in Luke 9:54-56, when Jesus' disciples sought to "command fire to come down from heaven" to consume some folks, Jesus communicated the value of the kingdom to them.
As a business leader, you need to communicate your values and expectations clearly and consistently to your employees.
This will help them align their work with the organisation's mission and purpose.
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another - John 13:34-35.
2. Empower Your Employees:
If your employees know that they can be trusted to make certain decisions, they will be more enthusiastic and committed to their jobs.
In the book, The Starbucks Experience, Starbucks staff were allowed to take decisions relating to customer satisfaction based on the foundational values of the organisation and in turn, staff were more emboldened to be innovative and customers were satisfied.
Jesus empowered his disciples by sending them out in twos to preach the gospel, heal and cast out devils in Luke 10.
Empower your employees by giving them the resources, training, and support they need to succeed.
They will feel valued and trusted, and it will also enable them to take ownership of their work.
3. Mentorship By Example:?
Jesus carried his disciples along and showed them by example, the realities of the supernatural life.
Much more than reading out instructions, laying out rules and issuing threats to get people to conform, you have to be seen as a breathing and walking example of the values you expect others to showcase.
You must be patient enough to walk people through, and considerate enough to encourage them when they make mistakes.
Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?

And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting - Matthew 17:19-21
In John 13, Jesus also showed mentorship by example when he washed his disciples' feet.
4. Regular Training:
But the Comforter,?which is?the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you - John 14:26,
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear,?that?shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come - John 16:13.
The scriptures above point to the importance of regular training and development. Your employees need to be provided opportunities for training and development regularly.
This will help them stay up-to-date with the latest skills and knowledge, and it will also enable them to perform their jobs more effectively.
5. Paint A Relatable Picture:?
Jesus Christ was a good storyteller and all through the scriptures, we find him using stories to paint relatable pictures in the minds of his listeners.
He always communicated in simple ways so that his listeners can relate easily without ambiguity.
According to Mark 1:16-18, see what transpired when Jesus went on a recruitment drive.
Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.
And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.
I read somewhere that the most popular radio station in the world is WII-FM.
WII-FM stands for What Is In It For Me?
6. Bond With Your Team:
The feet-washing service in John 13 is one of the numerous examples of Jesus bonding with his team.
As business leaders, bonding with employees by building trust and showing genuine interest in their lives and well-being is important.
This will help them feel more connected to the organisation and to each other, and it will also improve their overall job satisfaction.
And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.
And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them - Luke 4:38-39.
Also, in Luke 9:10, you will notice that Jesus took them aside to "chill" together.
You have a role to play as a business leader in creating a positive workplace culture that encourages employees to be involved, increases job satisfaction, and ultimately, organisational success.
