6 Lessons From 6 Years as a Communications Professional

As I reflect on my six years in the communications industry, I realize that this journey has been filled with numerous learning experiences. From navigating client relationships to building a successful career, here are six essential lessons that I have learned along the way:

1. Always sign a contract, no matter the relationship. Set the terms and ensure they are mutually agreeable.

Contracts protect both parties involved in a business relationship. They establish clear expectations, deliverables, and terms of payment. Regardless of how well you know the client or colleague, always have a written agreement to protect yourself and ensure a smooth working relationship.

2. Friendships don't always work out in business.

While it's tempting to collaborate with friends, it's crucial to evaluate their business-mindedness and accountability. Not all friendships translate well into professional partnerships. Ensure that the person you choose to enter a business relationship with aligns with your work ethic, values, and goals.

3. Do not compromise your values just to get new business.

It can be tempting to accept clients who may not treat you with respect or undermine your expertise, especially when bills need to be paid. However, compromising your values will only lead to stress and dissatisfaction in the long run. Choose clients who appreciate your expertise and treat you with professionalism. Here are some of my non-negotiables: No harsh tones, no expletives and NO discrimination against women.

4. Build a team or network of people who are smarter than you.

Surrounding yourself with individuals who possess different skills and expertise can propel your growth and success. Collaborating with people who challenge and inspire you will broaden your knowledge and enable you to achieve your goals more efficiently.

5. Teach, coach, and mentor along the way.

As you gain experience, don't hesitate to share your knowledge and help others who are starting their journey in the communications industry. Mentoring youngsters who aspire to be communications professionals not only contributes to their growth but also strengthens their own expertise by reinforcing their knowledge and improving their leadership skills.

6. Set a schedule and routine that works for you.

It's vital to establish a work-life balance that suits your needs and preferences. Define your boundaries and stick to them. For instance, designating specific hours for work calls or dedicating mornings to personal time can help maintain overall well-being and prevent burnout. I do not take work calls before 10 AM, I also don't accept work calls after 5 PM. I set time aside for me, as I learned really early in my career that I am “the bag,” I am the “asset,” and I am “the value-add.” I need to be good, so my work can be GREAT!

As I move forward in my career, I recognize that there is always more to learn. Whether you are just starting as a communications professional or have been in the field for years, these lessons can serve as a valuable reminder. Embrace continuous learning, adaptability, and a commitment to personal and professional growth.

Here's to many more years of growth, learning, and success in the communications industry!
