6 Key Strategies to Win the War Against Distractions

Hello, Chad E. Cooper coming to you because I wanted to follow up on a message I shared recently about distractions. I just turned off all notifications for the news because, quite frankly, it was pissing me off how frequently I was getting interrupted. The news flashes were intriguing, which is exactly what they are designed to do in order to suck us in. I realized the problem was that they aren’t adding any value to my life. To give context, here’s an excerpt from the message I shared recently about how these recent marketing tactics are reflected all the way back in our history to the Revolutionary War:

“To understand today's challenges, we as a nation, earned our freedom not with traditional warfare, but with guerrilla warfare. It was through irregular small scale fast moving sometimes unorthodox methods that allowed us to experience victory. And in many ways, we see the same tactics in the battles we face today. When we step back and look at society today, we are under guerrilla attacks. Today, we are ambushed almost daily with cyber warfare, social media manipulation, corporate manipulation, bingeing on social media, Netflix and other shows, and there's an absolute science today that is attacking us in a warfare type manner. It's making us addicted to elements of our society that attack the individual and weaken that the overall structure of our society.”

It’s critical to ask ourselves if we, as individuals, are prepared for the battles ahead. We must be aware of how to arm ourselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually to ensure that victory. We must be prepared for when this warfare strikes - this warfare of constant distractions, countless notifications, and consistent jabs subconsciously communicating what I have is not enough. I equate the frustrations I am having with the news to the problems I had with my old website - there was a lot of content but it lacked a powerful message. When I realized this, I finally reached the clarity that if something is not enriching my life, I must treat it with surgical precision and be selective with the information I allow in. This is why I completely overhauled my website, so that the information I shared included a powerful message to drive people to make decisions that would enrich the quality of their lives. Now, I am proud to say, it does exactly that (to see for yourself, check it out at www.chadecooper.com).

To help you see these ambushes and use surgical precision in the information you choose to let into your life, here are 6 key strategies to win the war against distractions:

  1. Distinguish the difference between content & message

The first strategy is to distinguish the difference between content and message. One gives you substance, the other gives you leverage. Content gives you knowledge or entertainment, while a message allows you to gain power and traction through the leverage and use of that message.

     2. Know how to apply knowledge and information

Information by itself is useless. There is a ton of information out there today. In fact, there is so much information it’s been scientifically shown to distract us. Knowledge and information only become powerful when we understand how to use it and leverage it.

     3. Use surgical precision on the content you consume

You now know you are being bombarded with tactical attacks every time you go on social media. Decide up front the specific amount of time you will spend and your specific purpose for consuming this content. Set a timer and when it goes off, know your time is done and stick to it.

     4. Know where the ambushes are being set

Marketing strategies are scientifically designed to pull you in and make you consume, and then crave more and more and more. You are intentionally being sent down the rabbit hole into the downward spiral of competition and comparison (which are the thieves of joy, by the way). Know that is the intent and limit your exposure. When you understand the tactics and the ambushes, you are more equipped to make a conscious choice for yourself and your best interests.

     5. Consciously navigate the minefield

It takes more than just ourselves to navigate the minefield and avoid the rabbit holes that suck you in. Consciously be aware that the battlefield has moved from the physical world to the virtual world and use this awareness to be better prepared.

     6. Know how to manage yourself

It is not enough to simply be consciously aware of the minefields and rabbit holes, you must also be firmly grounded in what actions to take instead - or what lifelines you can cling to in order to right yourself on solid ground. Listen to the guides, sages, and historical learnings that have stood the test of time and outline what truly matters in life. Discover your mission and freedom, infuse your life with adventure, and learn to speak your truth in love. Be mindful of the amount of time you are filling your heart and mind with the world’s “junk food” - binge watching episodes of your favorite TV show, instantly responding to social media notifications, constantly checking email or the news. Instead, spend time with the things that are healthy, nourishing, and life-giving to your spirit.

I hope this helps you make small adjustments over time, that little by little will add up to major leaps forward in your life. Little decisions every day can help you develop the strength to manage yourself and have a deeper sense of wholeness as you become consciously aware of not giving into the constant ambushes of today’s guerilla marketing tactics. By doing this, you can then go and influence others to do the same, because it is the application of information that gives you power.

Thanks for tuning in and let me know what else we can share and learn together as you go out and execute these strategies and create your legendary life.
