6 Key Areas to Fast-track Trust on New Teams

New Teams and Building Trust have been high on the list of 20+ Clients' development areas this week. In the coaching process, I find it helps to create a metaphor outside of the work-space. While doing a virtual coaching session earlier today, my Client envisioned being on a boat and needing to navigate the upcoming rapids.

As a coach, I encourage intuitive thinking and provide room for expression, as any leadership is preferable to none. Currently, six key areas are particularly impactful:

  1. Purpose: Before starting a task or project, discuss its real purpose and desired performance. What does the leader expect, and how can the team align with these expectations? A purpose is more compelling when it appeals to both logic and emotion. For example, meeting project deadlines is an achievement, but understanding that this success showcases the team's capabilities to senior management and prepares them for more significant, impactful projects can motivate the team further.
  2. Support: It's crucial to seek and offer support. Picture losing your paddles on a boat; you'd ask for help, and others would assist to not waste your potential. The same principle applies in business. If you err or can't complete all tasks, reaching out is often wise.
  3. Values: Identify the values needed at the moment. Using the river rapid metaphor, essential values might include reliability, determination, and initiative. Discussing and agreeing on values can significantly influence the team's thoughts and actions, especially in critical moments.
  4. Communication: It's important to voice your agreement or disagreement. In many organizations, conflict is seen negatively, leading to conformity rather than exploration of different paths. During busy or challenging times, don't hesitate to pause and discuss various options.
  5. Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge the team's achievements, even during tough projects. Break down large milestones into smaller steps, recognizing individual contributions like well-written emails, extra hours worked, or a team member's positive attitude. Celebrate these moments as if navigating each wave and rock successfully on a boat.
  6. Continuous Improvement: Reflect on what works and what could change. This reflection should be objective and inclusive, allowing team members to share their views without fear of judgment. This fosters a sense of belonging and strengthen's the initiative muscle.

Whether you're joining a new team and want to fast-track expectations or leading new people and want to reshape team/org strategy, implementing any or all will definitely level-up your leadership skills and create rewarding impact!
