Laparoscopic Gall Bladder Surgery ( Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy ) is one of the most common surgeries performed in the Department of General and Minimally Invasive Surgery. The commonest fear after any surgery is regarding postoperative recovery and return to normal activities and routine work. There is also the obvious fear of postoperative pain and discomfort. Due to these factors patient commonly delay their surgeries, which may result in unnecessary aggravation of symptoms and associated complications.

Here we answer 6 common doubts and queries that patients have regarding gall bladder surgery.



1.??????Do I need to stay overnight?

Laparoscopic gall bladder surgery has a quick recovery and less postoperative pain. Therefore in a planned elective surgery, patients can be discharged the same day. However some patients prefer to stay overnight and are discharged the next day.


2.??????What will be my diet following surgery ?

Start with light bland diet for a day or two and gradually shift to normal home cooked food in a couple of days. It is preferable to avoid fatty and spicy foods for the initial 2 weeks after surgery.?Avoid eating large meals, instead small frequent meals are preferable. There is no long term change in diet requirements after the surgery, contrary to what is commonly believed by people. ?


3.??????When can I resume physical activities?

When you get home to from hospital the next day , it is important that you get up and move around the house . You can perform normal daily activities and may also go for a relaxing walk in the morning or evening. ?However it is important that you avoid ?strenuous physical activities for a week or two.


4.??????How can I manage pain following surgery?

You will need the prescription pain medication provided at the time of discharge as directed. This will be needed for 5 to 7 days. After that medication may?be taken as and when required.


5.??????When can I join work?

It is important not to rush back and join work before you have recovered completely. Postoperative recovery depends on many factors like the severity of your disease /infection and also from person to person. ?It may also depend on the type of work that you do , whether it is a sedentary/ sitting job in an office ?or a demanding and stressful job .Therefore this may range from 5 days to 2 weeks. It is advisable to discuss this?with your surgeon


6.??????What are alarming symptoms that may need a doctors consultation?

Although it is obvious that it will take sometime to recover and there will be a period discomfort and mild pain, it is important to note some symptoms that may require a consultation with your healthcare provider . There include severe cramping or colicky pain in the abdomen , fever (high grade or continuous) and yellowish urine(jaundice) .
