“You can’t be the lead, you need to develop your people skills.”
How often have you come across your boss/colleagues saying this or something similar to you?
If you’re an introvert, there’s a good chance that you have been at the receiving end of such comments more than once. It has been argued that introverts cannot be in the lead simply because they don’t have the skills needed. But is this really true?
Fact is, every introvert can turn their personality type into their biggest strengths. It does require conscious effort, self-awareness and determination though. But then, which success story doesn’t?
I would like to list 6 leadership skills & show you that introverts have these skills and how they can use them to their advantage.?
1. Ability to think before speaking
Knowing how to send out the right message & articulate it with impact is of utmost importance in leadership.
But, there’s so much misconception about introverts being terrible at communicating. Today, I’m going to change this misconception.
How?
Well, for one thing, introverts LISTEN. Before responding, they listen to you carefully, they observe, think & reply. It might take them a little while to respond but they need this time to reflect. An introvert, who is silent in the group, might actually be quite engaged with the discussion and when given their turn, would be able to make considered and well thought out contributions. As someone once said, the best talkers don’t necessarily have the best ideas.
When it comes to leading, introverts make sure they listen to what teammates & subordinates have to say. This is an essential leadership skill as team members like to voice their opinions and be heard.
2. Choosing the right path
Choosing the right path for the company can be a daunting but equally thrilling task for leaders. The wrong decision can make a mess in the long run and affects not just you but your team and the organization. And so, it requires leaders to deliver well thought out & detailed decisions which can have a huge impact on everyone else.
Introverts have a well-structured thought process that they develop by channeling their energy into observing rather than spontaneously responding. This makes introverts good decision-makers as it they would have explored every aspect of the decision by delving deep into the process.
In turn, this makes introverted leadership a strong & effective one, contrary to common belief.?
3. ?Free mind space?
Efficient leaders let their teammates experiment with new ideas & give them the creative freedom to do so. No doubt, mistakes might happen but they are unlikely to affect the company as seriously as the decisions at the management level do.
Introverted leaders will lead like they want to be led. And how do they want to be led?
Introverts want to be given their own space to come up with new ideas & be productive in general. Introverted leaders will understand this & provide their teammates with their own mind space to work and not be controlling or micromanaging the team. ??
How do they do this?
Introverted leaders assign tasks to their teammates & then leave them to it. They let their teammates deal with it in a way that suits them best. This results in higher efficiency of work & productivity. Also more people want to be a part of a team where the leader has such a mind-set.
See how introverts are actually way more helpful in the leadership space than you think??

4. Influence, Inspire & Motivate?
Motivation comes naturally with positivity. If you’re a positive person you are also likely to be a motivator or someone others look up to. This means building great relationships with everyone around you.
“But that’s exactly what introverts are not good at, right?”
Yes, being around a lot of people can be overwhelming for an introvert but there’s a way to get around this.
Introverts are great at building 1:1 relationships. Leveraging this ability to its maximum to build meaningful relationships with their teammates/employees makes it easier for introverts to inspire them. This also builds trust in the leadership of the company.?
5. Growing with others?
Uplifting leaders understand that they grow when their team grows. You can be focussed on your growth as much as you want but your team’s growth is just as important.
Focusing on the needs of your employees/teammates not only helps them grow but also shows them that their leader cares about them.
An introvert’s attentiveness towards others makes them more empathetic. This is why introverted leaders are easily able to understand their employees & cater to their needs. This makes them more inclined to promote their team’s growth than their own.
Hope you now feel that you can safely start considering your introvert employees for leadership roles. I have more to share if I haven’t convinced you yet.?
6. Forming new relationships?
As I said at the beginning of this article, introverts are not considered to be good at socializing. Well, that’s not entirely true. It’s another misconception that’s been around for ages.
Yes, it can be overwhelming for introverts to meet several people at the same time. But is leadership only about networking?
What it really is, is about connecting with & leaving an impact or impression on every person you meet along the way.
When in a space with several people, introverts tend to make long-lasting and impactful relationships with a small number of people. While extroverts, on the other hand, tend to make superficial connections with larger numbers. Who are the people more likely to remember? The ones who made an impression and left an impact on them.
Humans are social beings & cannot survive or function well without contact with other humans. Introverts need to recharge themselves after being in a crowd. This is the only thing you need to be aware of. They do this by being in their own company. Once recharged, they are again ready to re-engage with people. So when put in a networking environment, be assured that introverts can do a pretty good job.
It’s as simple as keeping a balance between recharging & re-engaging themselves.
Your Takeaway?
Introverts have immense potential if they are transparent about themselves and their working style right from the beginning.
I hope I have managed to convince you that your beliefs(if you had) about introverts being antisocial & not fit for leadership were misconceptions. Introverts have excellent leadership skills which they can demonstrate given the chance and the time to do so. Giving introverts the time to be vocal about their personality will help you understand them better & get used to their unique style of leadership.
If you’re an introvert, remember to stick to your true personality. Being an introvert, who has control over oneself, is something to take pride in because not many people are able to do this as easily as you.
