6 Degrees for Marketing

6 Degrees for Marketing

I have to start by giving a big Thank You to Nadine L. for helping me put a name to Network Mapping.

Now, on to the article...

In the 1960s a psychologist named Stanley Milgram conducted a simple test to create a phenomenon called the 6 degrees theory.?

In short, he believed that most people can connect to total strangers in about 6 touch points if they just look at their social circles. This theory became so popular it became a game and is even being researched today on a larger scale (spoiler, the results from Milgram's experiments weren't off base).

So what does this mean to your business??

Understanding this principle and knowing how to apply it can get you in front of your ideal referral partners much quicker, and produce more effective results.?

Essentially people can be broken down into 3 categories

  • People you know
  • People you don't know
  • People who know the people you know (but don't necessarily know you)

Let's begin by mapping out our Influencers Network Group (I.N. Group)

1. List everyone you know. Yes, even the weird kid down the street.?

2. Who do they know, you don't??

3. What organizations do they belong to or work with?

4. Where are they currently employed?

5. Who could they all potentially know?

6. How can you leverage a meeting from your network?

Once you have done this, you should have a large network map that you can use to strategically ask for introductions and, ultimately get in front of those referral partners that would be traditionally more difficult to reach.?It is work, don't get me wrong, but the return on your invested time upfront will be well worth it. After all, we know in business there is no easy button...

Build your network and let your relationships build your business.?
