This week on my podcast I have Christopher S. Sellers. I loved our conversation.
We started with how I met Chris who commented on a LinkedIn post of mine about why collaboration ISN’T good for creativity on teams. I was immediately intrigued by his point of view. We start the podcast by diving more into this.
Chris’s new book, Applied Creativity, speaks to the current demand for creativity. He states in the podcast:
“There is demand for creative skill sets right now to build the future.
It revolves around more than innovation and problem solving, but it’s bigger than that.
What about the demand for empathy in leadership as well? Or our ability to adapt in crisis? Did we reactively pivot through Covid or did we freeze? How do we manage culture now? We need an expanded emotional intelligence.”?
The 6 creative skill sets Chris outlines brilliantly in his book, he briefly covers in the podcast:
Linear skill sets: What you learn and are taught to be competent. You are not “born” with these skills you have to develop them no matter what profession
?
Problem solving
?
Innovation: improving what we have.
?
Adaptability: Our ability to intelligently adapt.
?
Composition: musical harmony
?
Emotional intelligence
?
Originality

He concludes our interview with some powerful thoughts:
“We don’t have a creativity problem we have a values problem.
We don’t value creative skill, or creative intelligence as much as we value tech, stem, business, law, or marketing.
My question is “why not”? Because you need creativity to do all these things and to solve today’s problems.”
?
Creative skill sets are free.
The potential ROI is unlimited.
We all have access to the same information, but creativity allows us all to take in the same information and draw out a unique result.
You see problems in a way no one else does.
You see the solutions like no one else does.
You create the impossible when no one else thought it was possible.”

Chris’s mission is to restore creative intelligence.
You will love the interview I had with Chris. He certainly is a thought leader in the area of creativity.

I have a rule on my podcast: I never go past 20 minutes. We broke that rule because Chris just has so many fascinating thoughts. I could have talked to him longer. I know you will enjoy this interview.
