#6: Chart – And Continue to Command – Your Course

#6: Chart – And Continue to Command – Your Course

As we made our final trip up the Hudson for the season – our boat now headed for dry dock until April – a familiar sadness crept in. It’s always bittersweet, signaling the end of summer and the close of another boating season. Growing up in the South, I’ve never been a fan of the long, cold winters of the Northeast. North Carolina winters are shorter, lighter, less relentless. Here, the dark and cold linger, and they weigh heavy.

This trip, though, felt different.

As we passed under the Verrazzano Bridge and headed toward the Statue of Liberty, I reached for my phone. Every time we pass her, I snap a photo. Every. Single. Time. The sight never gets old. The statue herself never changes. Yet, this time, the moment felt heavier, more significant.

With the election behind us, I couldn’t help but reflect.

Relaxing into the rhythm of the boat, the steady rise and fall of waves beneath me, I watched the wake stretch out behind the engine. My thoughts turned to how far we’ve come as a country. As women, our rights have evolved, our freedoms expanded. But we still have a ways to go – and the progress has always felt fragile. This moment served as a stark reminder of just how much is at stake.

The outcomes of this election will alter the course for many. It’s a call to action: to not take anything for granted, to fight for the opportunities and freedoms we hold dear. If you want something, go for it. Be relentless. Be determined.

You are the captain of your own ship – and no one else will steer it for you.
