1. Conducting thorough background research about your audience, target media outlets and key journalists will help you create an effective pitch strategy.
2. Build pointed media lists that have actionable intelligence on writing style, recent coverage topics, tone and geographical focus of every reporter.
3. For yielding continuous results, focus on building lasting relationships with key reporters rather than taking a transactional approach.
4. Old school flowery press release lingo is mostly a passe, so shun it and make your language simple, transparent and to the point.
5. Time is the scarcest resource, especially for reporters; therefore, make your interactions valuable for them by focusing on areas of their interest.
6. Do not give references about other outlets covering your pitch idea as it can be a big turn-off for reporters who almost always want to do exclusive coverage.
