This is based on my article written for Carenectar.com, "The 5 Best and Most Overlooked Ways For Families to Take Better Care of Their Caregiver for FREE," and you can visit this complete article here.
However, that article is based on my Nanny ABCs Next Step Podcast, episode 34 on the 6 overlooked ways for families to take better care of their caregiver for FREE.
Yes, the podcast has a 6th FREE and overlooked way for families to take better care of their caregivers. I avoided the 6th in the article for various undramatic reasons - I wrote it clunky and it’s a hard topic to convey in the written word - BUT it was easy for me to talk about. You can Listen to the NANNY ABCs Next Step Podcast Episode 34 NOW.
- Here is an excerpt from the Nanny ABCs Next Step Podcast, Ep:34, The 6 Best and Most Overlooked Ways For Families to Take Better Care of Their Caregiver for FREE.
“...Here is one way you can really give your caregiver a leg up in their life, and it would be to pay them legally. So, I know a lot of your jaws drop just now because you (caregivers) get more money upfront and you (parents) spend less money if your parents because you’re paying taxes on their wages.??
If you get paid more than $600 (this is for America, sorry my UK friends this does not apply to you and I don't know what the rule is there but) in the USA, if you get paid more than $600 you have to report that to the IRS.
Here is why this gives nannies a leg up in the world... If something changes in their personal life, they live with their partner and then the relationship goes south and now they need to find a new apartment, landlords are going to ask for proof of employment and they wont have any.?
Or, they want to buy a home and they strut to the bank and when the bank asks them for three years of proof of employment, they can’t show it and the bank can only say, “sorry.”
You (caregivers) should be getting a W-2, this is what I go over in my Nanny ABC's Next Step course: Laws, Rights, and Compensation.?This industry is a bit of a wild west but definitely has some things going for it that you just might not know. You have rights…”
“...There is no one way to be a boss to your child caregiver. That’s part of what makes having a nanny so wonderful, your childcare is completely personalize for your family and you decide how it is done. Just like you, your caregiver is doing their best. A thank you or letting them leave a skosh early when there is nothing left for them to do will help to keep them happy and keep them around.”
ACTION STEPS for Caregivers
1) Take out a piece of paper and a pen.
2) Write down what it would take for you to thrive at your job. (These might be hard to think of. Examples: more direction when it comes to cooking dinner, paid time off, help with pick ups.)
3) Create solutions for how to get these. This simply might be having a conversation with your employer.
