6 of the best Aston Martins sold on Collecting Cars

The Aston Martin marque is now more than 110 years old, and as such is one of the most storied automotive brands in the world. To date, we have sold more than 400 Aston Martins on the Collecting Cars platform, making it one of the best-selling manufacturers.

The earliest example sold was a 1952 Aston DB2, while the newest was the sensational 2024 Aston Martin Valour – the first public sale globally, which was achieved in December 2024.

In this round-up, we’re taking a look at six of the best Aston Martins that have found new homes via Collecting Cars; in some cases boasting exceptional provenance, while others have been particularly rare specifications, or presented in outstanding restored condition.

1958 Aston Martin DB2/4 MkIII

Connoisseurs of the marque or of the work of Ian Fleming will know that while the DB5 connection is an invention of the silver screen, the Aston Martin originally driven by James Bond as described in ‘Goldfinger’ was in fact the DB MkIII. This accomplished ‘Feltham era’ Aston featured a hydraulically operated clutch and optional overdrive, and Girling disc brakes were also introduced early in the production run.

This particular 1958 Aston Martin DB2/4 MkIII was initially delivered to a doctor in South Africa, remaining there for over 40 years before being imported to the UK in 2001. It had just two keepers since then, with the seller being a renowned design authority. The matching-numbers 2.9-litre Lagonda straight-six was fed by twin SU carburettors, and the manual transmission was also equipped with overdrive in 3rd and 4th gears.

Benefiting from an extensive recent restoration, it remained in first-class condition throughout, and was described by the seller as “a joy to use”. Attracting more than 80 bids, it went on to sell for £186,000.

1987 Aston Martin V8 Volante

The original V8 Aston Martin was developed and manufactured during an especially tumultuous time in the company’s history. Initially available in the form of the DBS V8, a redesign followed, and in the late 1970s the now-legendary V8 Vantage was released. Further expanding the range, the V8 Volante was launched in mid-1978, with Weber fuel injection being added in the mid-1980s.

Brought to market in 2024, this 1987 Aston Martin V8 Volante was particularly notable for being equipped with the rare factory manual transmission – only fitted to around 20% of cars. Furthermore, the odometer indicated just 31,325 km, which was believed to be the genuine total from new given its long-term family ownership.

Presented in very usable condition, and accompanied by an ASI registration certificate from 2022, this V8 Volante attracted more than 5,000 viewers, and was sold with a winning bid of €151,000.

1990 Aston Martin V8 Vantage ‘X-Pack’

In standard specification on early 1970s cars, the 5.3-litre V8 produced around 310bhp. This was increased to an impressive 380bhp on ‘Vantage’ cars, but the hallowed ‘X-Pack’ went even further; with high-compression Cosworth pistons, larger valves, and four dual-barrel Weber carburettors taking power up to 420bhp – or 432bhp with full Works Service conversion.

This 1990 Aston Martin V8 Vantage was a genuine factory right-hand-drive ‘X-Pack’ variant, believed to be one of just 95 such examples. It was even rarer in Litchfield Black, and came with fantastic provenance having formerly been in the collection of renowned music star and collector Jay Kay of Jamiroquai.

Reported to be in excellent overall condition, and benefiting from a full service at well-known specialist Nicholas Mee less than 200 miles earlier, this superb high-performance grand tourer sold with a winning bid of £307,000.

1997 Aston Martin V8 Vantage V550

Launched in 1992 and first produced in 1993, the Vantage was a high-performance version of the Virage, imbuing the traditionally crafted Aston Martin with contemporary supercar pace thanks to a twin-supercharged V8 with 550bhp – capable of 0-60mph in just 4.6 seconds.

This 1997 Aston Martin V8 Vantage V550 was believed to have been supplied new to Steve Gibson OBE, the owner of Middlesbrough Football Club – and perhaps appropriately given the team’s colours, it was finished in Suffolk Red over Magnolia hide with red piping, red carpets, and red detailing for the dashboard top and steering wheel.

It was presented at auction with a recent advisory-free MOT test, and had covered 61,404 miles from new. After 61 bids, it was sold for £120,050.

2017 Aston Martin Vantage GT8

Inspired by the track-only Vantage GTE, the GT8 was a more track-focused version of the acclaimed Vantage model, with slightly wider tracks, a reduced ride height, stiffer springs and dampers, a dramatic body kit and rear wing, and a significantly reduced kerb weight thanks to its generous use of carbon-fibre.

This 2017 Aston Martin Vantage GT8 was finished in stylish Chiltern Green over a black Alcantara-trimmed cabin with carbon-fibre inlays and yellow ‘Vantage GT8’ headrest embroidery. Its mighty 4.7-litre V8 was capable of producing 446PS and 490Nm of torque, coupled to a seven-speed Sportshift II transmission.

Reported to have had just two owners and with just 15,011 km on the odometer, this sublime sports car received more than 6,000 views during the auction, and secured a winning bid of €165,500.

2017 Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Volante

Carrying on a collaboration between these two brands that led to the original DB4 GT Zagato of the 1960s, and the V8 Zagatos of the 1980s; the Vanquish Zagato programme saw just 99 examples built in each body style – Coupe, Volante, and Shooting Brake. There were also a further 25 units of the Speedster.

This 2017 Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Volante was a handsomely specified car, in Hammerhead Silver over a Pure Black interior; accented by the gloss-finish carbon-fibre for the windscreen pillars, bonnet vents, front splitter, side skirts, side strakes, and the large rear diffuser.

Despite having covered just 1,350 miles from new, the car had been serviced several times by marque specialists Pugsley & Lewis and Nicholas Mee. Spirited bidding during the auction saw more than 100 bids placed, and the car sold for £283,500.
