Can we quickly calculate stockpile volume using a photogrammetry drone?
How to?
“Drones are safer, faster and only half the cost of calculating volume compare to traditional methods.” — Dallas Van Zanten
A terrestrial surveyor will measure the height every 5–10 feet on each pile. Not only this method will be time-consuming and risky for surveyors climbing up and down the pile, it would also generate relatively few data points taken (with more distance on every points), compared to the digital surface area captured by the drone. For example an area with an estimate of 12 hectares, will take 1-2 full days to measure using traditional methods. How about using a drone? Only 30 minutes of data acquisition using fixed wing drone.
With above comparison data, we can see these following benefits can be produced by using photogrammetry survey:
1.Get a tonnage calculation results
Weight (Tonnage) of the stockpile can be calculated using bulk density data taken and combined in the field with the volume data from the acquisition of aerial photogrammetry. Faster and more efficient comparing traditional methods.
2. More efficient measurement
Drones can cover large areas faster and easily. With the help of standardized procedure from pre-flight to post-flight, makes it easier for you to get volume calculation results in a better scheduled timeframe.
3. Better accuracy and precision
With more efficient measurement and calculations, drone didn't have to sacrifice the accuracy and precisions to have good quality of survey data because it equipped with high-resolution cameras or sensors which can capture more detailed photos and accuracy. So that it can be used for good 3D modelling and accurate volumetric calculations in the specified boundary area.

4. Cost efficiency
Using drones to calculate volumes can provide cost savings compared to conventional methods. In terms of manpower, equipment prices and time durations, it shows quite a high gap in comparison for the long term cost.
5. Increase safety compliance
Drone technology only need at least 2 dedicated locations to do take-off and landing spot. Some new UAV/Drones can have a great accuracy in take-off landing spot (in multirotor and VTOL type of drones). So operators, didn't have to climb and down the stockpiles and have the human safety risks. In some cases, mobilizing and logistic movements in conventional survey provides more risks in operators and equipments (especially for soft materials stocks). By using drone technology, the survey team can carry out their work without having to go to potentially risky and difficult-to-reach areas.
6. Monitoring regular data and it's change
Surveys can be carried out to cover the same area regularly and in stages to see changes and the level of accuracy of historical and calculation data. Being able to see the volumetric difference helps users to track and provides some good decision making in planning, and upcoming infrastructure implementations. And also today, the data can be accessible in cloud, wherever and whenever we need it.
