6 beefs I have with social media

6 beefs I have with social media

I'm fed up of seeing the BS on social media.

What is worse, I'm fed up how insidious it is and how to convinces people to replicate what they are seeing.

#1 Alex Hormozi Wannbe's

If I see another twenty-something wearing a cap backwards sporting a vest offering business advice, I think I'm going to throw up.

I have no beef with Alex Hormozi, he has actually DONE something.

I do take issue with kids taking business advice from others and spitting it out as if it's their own.

They have no idea about business. They are just playing a content game. They get access to royaly free course, rebadge and sell it as their own.

Just this week, someone who looked about 12 offered to help me get an extra 10k in revenue per month. Upon probing, they had not reached 10k themselves, they were just copying what they had learned in a course and made their own.

This is nothing new, but I'm seeing more young people doing this, believing that this is the way to a quick buck.

Many of them have no experience other than using social media. They are regurgitating information but it's not coming from a place of experience. It's perverse that people with no experience can play the game and get the audience when there are millions of experienced people who can add lots of value, who are lost in obscurity.

Sour grapes, maybe, but the point is valid. We have people with no experience setting the narrative others are following.

It's the blind leading the blind.

#2 Soft porn... I mean personal branding

I'll get some stick for this. I'll get accused of trying to control women or trying to tell women what to do.

First, it's a free country. People are free to do whatever they choose.

But, I think some of what I've seen is more suited to Onlyfans than LinkedIn.

In some cases these provocative posts flashing the flesh often have a follow on post where they share screenshots of some of the comments they get from pervy men.

For me, it feels like a game.

The photography is deliberately taken to stir things up and get attention.

Having consulted with my wife on this point, she also makes the point that men do this too. So it isn't a unique trait to women. I think if you get in the way of your message, you are conveying the wrong message.

It's free country, people can do as they choose. You can do what you want with your social media, but I would gently suggest it's worth checking your motives before posting.

#3 Faking success for social media

Did you know the Lamborghini has fallen out of fashion?

The hire car of choice for your social media guru is now a Bugatti or Maserati.

Of course, most of these cars aren't owned by the Guru, they are rented for the photoshoot.

I don't know which is worse, the faking of wealth or that fact that people fall for it. This tactic of showing great wealth to convince people to part with their money doesn't make sense to me.

  • Why is someone with great wealth needing money from working people?
  • Why is someone making mega bucks, pimping themself out on social media?
  • Why after making it do they want to give back with their $47 course?

Maybe it's me, but If I found the secret to making obscene wealth, I'd probably keep it to myself.

#4 Genuine rich people preaching to the majority

I grew up in a working class background. I didn't have all the designer labels and my idea of a holiday was going to Wales for a two week holiday at Pontins.

I get really annoyed when I see rich kids and people born into wealth sharing their wisdom on social media.

I saw a post recently about someone giving advice about how to make a million bucks if they had to start from scratch.

Their first step on the ladder to making a million was "get a high paying sales role offering $20k commissions and close 2 deals a month"

Oddly, the posters background..... Daddy was an investment banker.

I also have no time for lectures from people who have the advantage of extreme wealth. I'm more interested in people who've made it from modest backgrounds. They can really teach you something.

Maybe this one is just because of my background, but I feel this nonsense is basically naivety to the real world.

It p*sses me off

#5 Marketing being used to lie

No alt text provided for this image

I've left the worst until last. But this is almost as annoying. We aren't stupid, we know that all marketing contains a bit of positive spin. Marketing is biased. What I'm seeing more now, is blatant lies.

I'll share with you two which do the rounds.

The first is the 'or you don't pay' offer. It's an offer which promises no risk if you work with them. In the world of marketing everyone has had a bad experience. This no risk offer, sounds great, but it's a total lie. Once they have you hooked in they with their no risk offer, they will eventually talk about how there is no risk to you, but they need an upfront deposit.

The offer implies no risk and you won't pay until you achieve success. Once you get down the road, you realise even the commission only marketing strategies involve some form of prepayment.

Try getting that back if it doesn't work out.

Most of those using it have no address, no contact information and couldn't afford to give it you back if you sued them.

There is one more part to this, this is the fake social proof. I was invited to join a 'review for review' scheme a few months ago. I review them, if they review me. I declined.

Oh and not forgetting the fake bank statements. Many use Google Chrome to edit bank statements and stripe accounts to show how much money they have made and post it as social proof.

#6 Onlyfans recruitment & Pervy people.

To balance point 2, I have to also raise the issue of people looking for sex on social media. Some of my own team have been propositioned by men on LinkedIn.

I get messages on LinkedIn, yes LinkedIn from fake profiles trying to get me to check out Onlyfans accounts. Often the accounts look like normal people, but the DMs get saucy real fast.

Finally, we have to talk about the pervy men. They comment on young women's posts and miss the point of the post and feel the need to comment and message inappropriately. It's usually older men who should know better. Whatever my views on point 2, it doesn't excuse bad behaviour by men.

These are my 6 beefs with social media that I think we need less of.

I hope I'm talking common sense.

What are your beefs with social media?

Really insightful read Dean Seddon ?? . I see some familiar points, the fake profiles are especially annoying, but easy to spot thankfully. Thanks for the valuable tips.

That is a helpful analysis and insights into Social Media Marketing in some of its most misrepresentations and abuse of content marketing in Digital Marketing. It is technology in the wrong hands and social media platforms irrelevantly accessed and misused. Thanks for sharing.

Another great post Dean Seddon, social media is full of so-called experts, many of whom have zero experience or skills. With so many of these "wannabes" online it makes it very difficult for clients to "choose" who can actually help them. I am tempted to do a similar post about "Business Coaches" ......
