5th Anniversary: 140 Simple Messages to Guide Emerging Leaders

In 2018, I wrote a short, easy-to-read book I hoped would help new and seasoned leaders. I selected a format used by my publisher designed for the social media platform Twitter (now called X).? I believed this format for short messages was an effective way to distill the many sage pieces of wisdom I learned from influencers in my life—my parents, other family, friends, teachers, people of faith, work colleagues, and public figures.? To that end, the book “140 Simple Messages to Guide Emerging Leaders” was released in five formats:

·????? eBook

·????? Audio Book

·????? Kindle

·????? Paperback

·????? Hardcover

In addition to 140 simple messages, I included two essays in the appendix highlighting my view of the phrase “emerging leaders.” The essays "What is an Emerging Leader?” and “What is Coaching and Why It Matters for Emerging Leaders” became the foundation for a new keynote speech, a full-day in-person workshop, and the Keep Leading!? podcast.?

My passion for redefining how people view the phrase “emerging leaders” and my work with hundreds of emerging leaders led Dr. Ruth Gotian to call me the “Preeminent Authority on Emerging Leaders” in her Forbes column.? This was indeed a humbling recognition.

Eddie Turner’s Categories of Emerging Leaders

  1. Children and Youth (Any age K-12)
  2. Traditional College Students (Typically around 18-22)
  3. Early Career Professionals (Typically first five years out of college 22-27)
  4. High Potential Employees (Often past the early stage of their career and referred to as a Hi-Po.)
  5. Newly Promoted (Any age. Any stage.)
  6. On Leave (Employees who take a temporary leave of absence (maternity or paternity leave, sabbatical, missionary work, care for aging parents, pursue additional education, etc.)
  7. Transitioners (People who transition from one career to another. Attorneys, for example, who transition from a career in law into leading an organization as a senior executive.)
  8. Promoters (Anyone who receives a promotion. Non-leadership, informal leadership, or formal leadership)
  9. Job Changers (Leaders who change companies.)
  10. In Crisis (Leaders during times of crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic showed that even the most experienced leaders needed to emerge as a leader in a new way.)
  11. EVERYONE (We all are or should be emerging as a leader. As I say on the Keep Leading!? podcast, leadership is not a garment we put on and take off. Leadership should be who we are always.? To do that most effectively, we must not get complacent. We must continue to grow and, yes, emerge as a leader in new ways throughout our careers and our lives!)

My singular goal for the book was to be a tool to help people.? In many respects, it also became an exercise in gratitude.? I realized all the people I am fortunate to have influenced my life.? It is a gift to have true friends and mentors. To my surprise, the book became an international bestseller, coming in at #26 on the Top 100 Paid list and featured as a new release.

In collaboration with my publisher, Mitchell Levy, I celebrated the book’s first anniversary in 2019 by giving away the Kindle version for free.? It reached additional places around the world.? It was a #1 Best Seller in five countries (Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, United States), Top 10 Best Seller in three countries (Netherlands, Spain, United Kingdom) and Top 50 Best Seller in three countries (Brazil, India, Italy) for five straight days in five categories:

·????? Leadership

·????? Business Leadership

·????? Business Teams

·????? Business Management

·????? Business Mentoring and Coaching

International Results on the First Anniversary

For 72 hours on September 15-18, 2023, in collaboration with my publisher, I again gave the Kindle version of the book away for free.? It was a #1 Best Seller in the United States in two categories:

·????? Business Leadership

·????? Business Mentoring and Coaching

I’m grateful to everyone who supported my first book, the people I quoted, my publisher, and my team who helped me promote it.?

Since my first book was published, I am a bit embarrassed to admit I started writing three other books I never released, including one book where a major book publisher offered a financial advance against royalties. ?I have produced two beautiful children with my wife Ashlea rather than books.? While I did not release the books I started on, I’m proud to be part of making contributions to two other books.

I am among 60 contributing subject matter experts to The Talent Development Book of Knowledge (TDBoK?).? This is the first-ever definitive resource for the talent development profession. The principal author and editor is the renowned Elaine Biech.

I am among 60 contributing subject matter experts to the Talent Development Book of Knowledge.

I received my copy of the TDBoK? signed by Elaine Biech.

I am among 60 contributing subject matter experts to the Talent Development Book of Knowledge.

Additionally, I am one of 52 co-authors of “The LiGHT Book 2.” This book’s primary audience is the nation of Poland, where it was first released before being released globally.? It’s an honor to Marshall Goldsmith, Ewa Jochheim, Pawel Motyl, John Baldoni, Michael Hyatt, Anindita Mahapatra, Agnieszka Servaas, Chester Elton, Krystyna Pietrzykowska, Marcus Buckingham, and other global thought leaders!

I look forward to turning my attention back to book writing and publishing.? It is a humbling experience to submit one’s thoughts to the world for scrutiny by others.? At the same time, it is rewarding to share knowledge and impact people one leader at a time in ways that cannot fully be appreciated until someone shares their experience of how my work has impacted them.? Thank you, dear emerging leader, for your continued support. Keep Emerging! Keep Leading!?
