5Ps of Leadership: Look people in their eyes

Leadership styles describe the differing types of leadership that leaders use. Effective leadership is based upon ideas—both original and borrowed—that are effectively communicated to others in a way that engages them enough to act as the leader wants them to act.

It's very easy to state that leadership is important across functions. In general about leadership, it's not the same as management or the use of power. Leadership, it's very much targeting the inside of people- cognition, meaning, emotions, even perhaps spirituality, and understanding expectations. It's about influencing how we relate to the world. You look people in their eyes.

There are important aspects of leadership that make someone true & authentic LEADER. 5Ps (Prophet, Pastor, Psychotherapist, Party-host & Pedagogue) are essential elements of leadership. Mingle of those components are key to succeed.

Prophet:

Leader has a vision. Working with prophecies, creating an ideal future, facilitating mind stretch and engagement. Leading with symbolic actions, expressions, acts that are unconventional, that makes an impression, and then make people around you really feel- wow.

Pastor:

A pastor is not a person necessarily with a vision. The pastor is more inclined to work with morality, to preach it, to emphasize what's good, the right values, the right morality or ethics. So there's an interest in being good and doing good. The leader is a moral shepherd, encouraging people to do the right thing.

Psychotherapist:

?It's very much about emotions and dealing with people's feelings, the stress, uncertainty, anxiety etc. If you are psychotherapist, then you are much more kind of laid back. You hold yourself back. You are more prone to listening, attuned to people's problems and difficulties, and their state of mind. So you proceed from people's need, coaching, and psychotherapeutical activities-- of course, not in a very advanced sense.

Party-host:

The leader as a party host is very much into people feeling and atmosphere. It's not about individual needs and emotions. It's more the general climate or atmosphere at the workplace. So everybody should be involved. They should be included. You should walk around and make people feel good about the situation. People should not feel outside. They should feel a part of the party, part of the community. So as the manager walk around, ask people, how are you doing; try to remember their situation, the name of the dog or whatever; and then really try to have this nice atmosphere where everybody's included and feel part of the good community at the workplace.

Pedagogue:

As a pedagogue, leaders try to support people's development, training, competence issues. You try to clarify what's the meaning, what's the point with all this. How do you understand your work? How do you understand relations? How can we improve when it comes to the thinking and the use of skills in relationship to all this? So educational activities, ongoing training, the management of meaning are key aspects if the leader works as a pedagogue. So as a pedagogical leader, we are not necessarily solving a problem and telling people what to do. You may encourage them to think through this and try to solve it themselves, and then accept, perhaps, if the solution is not optimal because the learning path is the key element in all this.

To conclude, in leadership, thinking about being a prophet, a pastor, psychotherapist, party host, and pedagogue can be quite helpful for being an effective person. By infusing leadership into everything you do and each thing you touch, you can live remarkably.  But as with all things when it comes to leadership, it's very important-- don't overdo it.
