5MM #84: The social network no one is talking about

Happy Monday-

For those new to the newsletter, the "5-Minute Monday" is 3 quick-hitters (hence the name 5-minute...) designed to get you thinking early in the week around Marketing, Personal Development, and the Creator Economy.

0 to 8,000 subscribers in 2 months

Tyler Denk, the CEO of beehiv, recently started his own newsletter and, in this article, shares the full step-by-step playbook on how he went from 0 to 8,000 subscribers in just two months.

Some of the ideas needed money behind them, so it wasn't like he had just launched and had 8k subs by tweeting a lot. But there is still a lot to learn, and it is good to see what is available. One I really liked:

Teasing upcoming issues "One of the easiest and most underrated ways to grow your list is simply teasing your upcoming newsletter on socials. And then sharing a second promotion after it goes live." Note - Justin Welsh does a really good job of this too.

It's also not mentioned as a tactic, but look at the structure and design of the newsletter. His retro computer style creates a brand that helps it stand out in the sea of other newsletters. Also, look at the little things at the bottom of his newsletter with the referral system and playlist.

It adds a bit of personality, and as more newsletters are produced, you need to start thinking of how to differentiate.

In mine, I include the "Got one more minute" section. It is on brand with the "5 Minute" theme and requires you to scroll a little further to find what may feel like a surprise or bonus.

I get a surprising amount of good feedback on just that section...what little things can you do to add something different?

GPS Planning

I have always been impressed with Ali Abdaal's ability to keep things as simple as possible. Whenever he teaches something, it just "makes sense" and feels like, "Oh ya, I can totally do that." In a recent email, he is giving advice to someone who wants to grow their TikTok channel.

Instead of jumping straight into the tactics, he has her run through a system called "GPS" - Goal, Plan, System.

What’s the goal? Once you’ve worked that out, what’s the plan to get you to the goal? And then what’s the system that’s going to help you stick to the plan.

Simple, but effective.

How to Master Storytelling

I have been loving David Perell's series of interviews on his YT channel. The production quality is excellent, and he gets some really big names.

Above, I discussed Ali's ability to simplify concepts specifically for productivity. If there were an equivalent for marketing and business, it would be Shaan Puri.

Even if you are a good storyteller, I would watch this to see how Shaan teaches. A few nuggets I pulled:

  • "It can only be as long as it is interesting." - The length of a story should be determined by its level of interest, not by a predetermined standard.
  • Creating a "Binge Bank" of content is more valuable than a resume or portfolio, allowing people to binge your content like a Netflix show and see your value.
  • Every story is a five-second moment of change, where the characters transform from their initial beliefs or habits to the opposite.

If someone were starting over today, he would tell them to start on LinkedIn because that is where he is making the most money and seeing the best results (x is awful now). However, in the end, he shows off his Pinterest account—yes, Pinterest!
