5G- A Window of Opportunity for Transforming India

Thanks to the unwavering and staunch determination of the Union Government, India now joined the elite map of countries that provide a 5G network to their citizens. From the end of 5G spectrum auctions on 1 August 2022 to the official launch of 5G service on 1 October 2022, India took less than 60 days to complete the entire process. While hailing telecom and network enterprises for their speed and agility, the Government of India, under the leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi , should also be given a big chunk of the applause.

The Ministry of Communications led by Mr Ashwini Vaishnaw , the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) under the ministry have played a pivotal role in ensuring a smooth and swift rollout of the advanced technology in the country. From setting up a test-bed in IIT Madras to launching the full-scale operations during the India Mobile Congress (IMC) on 1 October, DoT has been crucial in every step. Incidentally, the phones used to make the first ever 5G calls during the testing and launch phases were manufactured by Samsung in India under the government's flagship Make In India scheme.

Now that the most advanced wireless communication technology is here, the question that would have been bugging every Indian's mind could be, how will it help the country?

5G brings its own opportunities and challenges to the country. What sets 5G apart from everything is, its ability to deliver higher multi-Gbps data speed, massive bandwidth and network capacity, ultra-low latency, better availability, and more reliability.

The 5G services will play a crucial role in achieving the economic goal of making India a USD 5-trillion economy by 2024-25. According to the latest report, 5G will have a cumulative economic impact of USD 1 trillion by 2035 and can deliver an additional GDP of USD 150 billion between 2025-40 for India.?

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) systems can now be used to have an end-to-end effect on multiple sectors like disaster management, healthcare, agriculture, and education. 5G can transform the transport and mobility sector. For instance, during the launch of 5G, Prime Minister Modi drove a car far away in Europe from here in New Delhi. In the EV sector, automobiles and charging stations will gain the most from the advanced 5G services. 5G will also augment the experience of live streaming, live music, and Ultra HD content streaming for viewers.

Unlike most other nations, India is more prone to natural disasters like cyclones, landslides, and avalanches. The low latency, quick response systems of 5G can help India enhance their disaster response and management. It also leads to efficient healthcare services through remote monitoring of health data and remote consultation and diagnostics.?

Applications of 5G in the manufacturing sector include reduced costs, lower downtime, minimum wastage, and improved productivity. A recent survey on Indian Enterprises by EY revealed that more than 70% of the companies are willing to invest the highest in 5G compared to other emerging technologies in the next three years.

As the 5G services reach every corner of the world, the demand for 5G-enabled mobile phones, earphones, laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices will rise in the next few years. For India, this is a long-awaited opportunity, and it is high time all the stakeholders come together to seize it. A collaborative approach, assisted by an encouraging policy ecosystem and appropriate regulatory framework, can make India the global export hub for electronics.

I think affordable 5G compliant mobile phones are a must and Samsung having the largest market share should take this as an opportunity as a ‘first move’ advantage

Precision farming and offering real time solutions to the farming community in the Agriculture sector has been a challenge so far because of poor connectivity and low internet speed. I myself have experienced this many a times while connecting wireless Wi-Fi based electronic sensors in the cold chain industry to measure temp, RH and Co2 levels. Because of poor connectivity, the sensors often would stop working and or with slow internet speed, would take undue long time to process the data and transmit the same to the user ultimately defeating the very purpose for which these are installed. A great opportunity and potential lies here with 5G communication technology network
