The 5G Triangle: Bandwidth, Capacity, Latency
The 5G triangle has the potential to revolutionize the vertical industries with applications and use cases that have the prospect of accelerating the global economy. The 3GPP standards define the 5G triangle in the form of 5G use case scenarios called enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC), and Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLCC).
In practice, in any shape or combination, the 5G triangle (i.e.) bandwidth, capacity, and latency enable next-generation business-driven, business-critical, and mission-critical applications. These applications with a different mix of 5G triangle caters to various use cases, including how people see and experience reality to mitigate downtime in airports to how cities operate, goods manufactured, disasters prevented, and public safety that keeps us all alive.?
For example, in industrial automation applications, the use cases such as augmented reality and plant asset management require high bandwidth, sensor networks require increased capacity, mobile robots and motion control require low latency. Thanks to 5G architecture, it facilitates flexible options and adapts quickly and effectively to cater to various service level agreement (SLA) requirements.??
The SLA may range from a simple key performance indicator (KPI) / key quality indicators (KQI) to complex, depending on what we want to do. The example includes bandwidth from a few Mbps to 10 Gbps, 100s and 1000s of devices within a service area, time synchronization from <= 1 us to 100ns, availability from 99.9% to 99.999999%, Communication cycle time <0.5 ms, positioning accuracy <0.2 m, and more.?

The 5G flexible design permits us to reinvent the way we may design and deliver cost-effective applications and use cases. The number of built-in enablers helps us to do that, such as CUPS, service-based architecture, virtualization, orchestration, disaggregation, open interfaces, and others. Such flexibility allows us to adopt 'design thinking and agile' principles, enabling us to design, build, and deliver applications and use cases.?
Amongst all enablers, SLICING takes it to the next level. It empowers us to provide solutions with 5G triangle characteristics in a much finer SLA granularity from not only network perspective but also from service, applications, device, and customer perspective. However, achieving all this brings more complexity and no longer be practical to manage manually. The intelligence and automation integrated from single-domain level to cross-domain level is a must. It is fair to consider with caution that there are always limits to what is desired to what is attainable.
At Wavelabs, we genuinely believe in a 'design thinking and agile' philosophy. We accelerate the journey to future connectivity by offering the unique blend of next-generation digital, cognitive, and network technology services and solutions. We are an ardent proponent of the 'OPEN X' network vision that enables unprecedented innovation, agility, choice, cost efficiency, and speed to market. We help our clients to overcome challenges, explore limits and realize the idea of the open and disaggregated 'White Box' connectivity products and solutions a reality.?
