5G RedCap: The Bridge to Cost-Effective, Power-Efficient IoT

The IoT revolution is gaining incredible momentum, but many compelling use cases need a middle ground between LTE's affordability and 5G's high performance. That's where 5G RedCap comes in!

What is 5G RedCap?

  • "Reduced Capacity" version of 5G, offering the perfect balance of speed, power efficiency, and cost.
  • Ideal for wearables, industrial sensors, smart meters, and video surveillance solutions.
  • Simplified architecture for lower module costs

Quectel: Leading the RedCap Charge

Quectel Wireless Solutions is at the forefront of 5G RedCap innovation, with modules like the RG255G and the Rx255C series offering:

  • Downlink speeds up to 220Mbps, uplink up to 121Mbps
  • Significant power savings compared to full-scale 5G
  • Compatibility with existing 4G networks
  • Optional GNSS positioning

Australia: Leading the Charge in 5G RedCap Trials

Australia is emerging as a key hub for 5G RedCap trials, with Optus and Telstra both testing Redcap in late 2023.

Embracing the RedCap Revolution

If you're involved in IoT development, product design, or connectivity strategy, now is the time to start exploring 5G RedCap's potential. This technology holds the key to unlocking industrial applications that were previously impractical or cost-prohibitive. The RedCap global deployment is underway – stay ahead of the curve and reap the benefits of this transformative 5G evolution.

It's good that APAC is leading the trials of this, but there is something to bear in mind here - when RedCap falls back to 4G, you lose all your power-saving features, So quite a different design paradigm from traditional LPWA on a battery powered device.
