Will 5G open new opportunities for the modernization of Intelligent Transportation Systems?

Every day I hear new innovative uses cases for a low latency network in dense metropolitan areas. Multi-model traffic and transportation management is an exceptionally exciting space. There is limited capacity and funding in many dense areas for new infrastructure and the only possible option is expanding public transportation and better management of the current transportation assets. Automated Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) using Ramp AI/Enabled workflows for metering, signal control, Corridor management, and Incident management can bring a new level of efficiency and increased throughput to ATMS systems and low latency networking of intelligent traffic management systems (Loops, VDS, VDI, Ramp meters and signal controllers and video analytics) coupled with AI-based data analytics can bring a new level of efficiency and automation to the ATMS systems.

Similar opportunities exist in Transportation management. One example is Bus, Taxi, and public transportation intelligent scheduling that takes into account rider location and destination at any moment using AI-based automation to schedule rides and transportations schedules.

These solutions require the deployment of low-cost processing infrastructure at the edge of the network to achieve the latency and throughput requirements with the 5G connectivity.

Edge orchestration technologies like what is available from @robin.io are a critical complement to deploy and manage such systems at the scale that is needed to be effective.

Hope we in the US consider spending the newly allocated infrastructure dollars where it can make a big impact on the infrastructure we have versus just building new roads
