5G Microcells in towns and cities
The deployment of 5G microcell in towns and cities is necessary now that 5G is gaining pace across many urban locations. In order to maximise the opportunities 5G offers, TowerCo operators are already assessing the microcell options available to them.
One successful example of a microcell in action comes from ATC (American Tower Corporation). It has developed a MUPI solution that features an internal antenna powered by Delta’s CellD 20 power solution.
But… what is a MUPI?
MUPIs are advertising display platforms often found located across cities’ busiest streets. Typically, they house advertisements of different sizes, but the most typical size format supported is 120x196 centimetres. To attract the public’s attention and to make it easier to view their content, MUPIs are backlit and have two sides that can be hired independently to display different promotional material.

ATC decided to develop a new MUPI solution that would enable it to include all of the Telco components necessary for the MUPI to function effectively, while also leaving enough free space internally so that more components could be easily added, thus future-proofing the MUPI.
With respect to component suppliers, Delta was one of the partners selected by ATC to provide the DC solutions and batteries that power the MUPI. Delta’s CellD 20 power system was selected by ATC and installed in the prototype, the first of which was presented to the market at the 5G Seville Forum.
Since then, a significant new step has been taken. A few days ago, ATC Spain and the local Government of the Province of Madrid, reached an agreement for the implementation of this solution in towns in Madrid, providing companies with access to this new technology.
The first place deployment for the MUPI is in the city of Valdemorillo. Delta is proud to be part of this exciting initiative and to be able to support an important customer.
