5G on exploration way at Roland Garros 2019. When 5G becomes reality.

Many thanks to Orange-Nokia-OPPO-ANFR (Frequency regulator)-FFT (French Tennis Federation) and France Télévision innovation Lab for this interesting venture.
The initiative demonstrated an 8k video transmission on 100 MHz channel in the 3.6GHz band. A real simulation of what can a private network on 5G deliver (called gold service). I can confirm that it was working well during the tennis tournament with an 80-100mb/s constant throughput of video on TV.
5G tools are still missing. This demonstration uses 4G with a 700MHz antenna for the hook, and then pass through Orange 4G’s core with an OPPO smartphone on 5G sim card. This highlights areas for improvement to deliver a standalone 5G network. However, it was not the main purpose of this demo. The conclusion is that the mobile industry is making sure 5G is on track.
In their innovation center at Roland Garros, France télévision Lab is offering the opportunity to meet the actors of this great initiative. You can exchange with them on the technical aspects that still needs developing, the business model for the general public, connected objects and for private networks. You can grasp the amount of work involved from all stakeholders to coordinate and work closely together to make it a success. Importantly, it is a great opportunity to speak about spectrum optimisation and of course listen to each other’s views on 5G licensing prices as well as the 5G operational deployment challenges such as latency and processes….etc
From a personal point of view, I can imagine what 5G would bring to an Olympic venue during Paris 2024 , in terms of full radio coverage, access possibilities to the network (fiber and point to point), the ability to collect a massive amount of data and put them to Olympic services dedicated to future and innovative applications. It will allow the provision of new and personalised services for the host broadcaster OBS. I can also foresee the benefits to the public watching with one eye the field of play and with the other their smartphone providing them information/statistics/scoring details and video replay in real time.
We now need political and regulatory support the engineering to make 5G happen smoothly but surely.

5 年Thanks for the article. The issue I see is going to be demand for spectrum and everyone going off to do their own version of 5g like Verizon. I hope we can keep to as many standards as possible BUT also leave some of the spectrum for private LTE for calls not just data. As we move forward in the next 12 months we will see a massive uplift in the use of Private LTE network and also 5G. The next big thing will be the chipsets and the speed increase but we know the higher in frequency we go the more antenna and base stations will be needed. Interesting times ahead
