A transformational year for the Mobile, Telco & 5G Industry
2022 was a year dominated by political turbulence and rising energy costs. However, against a backdrop of widespread uncertainty, the telecoms industry has remained remarkably resilient, even achieving a 9% growth from 2021.
The transformations, innovations, partnerships and breakthroughs to come out of 2022 - from 5G adoption, cloud security, sustainable telcos and improved wireless networks, to AI applications, 6G and the beginnings of the metaverse - are something for the industry to be immensely proud of.
And, exploring these widespread transformations, Mobile Magazine saw another six outstanding editions last year. These featured the likes of Fabio Pellegrino from Sunrise UPC, Katherine Ainley from 爱立信 , Leo-Geert van den Berg from Ziggo , Jonathan (Jon) Cole CB OBE from BT Business and Ceren Clulow ’s 5G Connected Forest grabbing everyone’s attention.
"2022 was an exceptional year for Mobile Magazine. Speaking on behalf of our brilliant team, we were immensely proud to feature some of the industry’s biggest names. We’ve been covering the biggest developments of the last 12 months as they happen. And let me tell you, the telecoms space is no stranger to taking big leaps," says Josephine Walbank , Editor of Mobile Magazine and Data Centre Magazine .

What does 2023 have in store for telcos?
This year we have entered new realms of possibilities for global connectivity. Across every conceivable scale, industry and use case, new strategies, partnerships and technologies are emerging that have the capacity to disrupt at a previously inconceivable scale.
And, as we now start to see these solutions being put to the test, we’re excited to see how these revolutionary projects will scale for global benefit.
Although it’s no mean feat to predict what will come next, keep reading to find the developments we’re anticipating in the year ahead...
The Top Telecom Trends in 2023
As the telecom industry continues to work towards becoming more sustainable, inclusive, data-driven and resilient, these telco industry trends are set to be a core focus throughout 2023.??
5G Standalone Deployments
2023 looks to be the ‘Year of True 5G’ with faster 5G SA adoption and deployments, alongside many innovative monetisation use cases being launched or trialled worldwide.?
From enterprise #5G / industry 4.0 use cases to private 5G networks, AR and VR, network slicing, and IoT, we predict that 2023 will be the year when 5G SA deployments take off. As a result, we also predict that 2023 will be the year we see 5G speed up the future of business, for both retail and enterprises alike.
Cloud-native IT
The continued trend towards the adoption of cloud and #hybridcloud infrastructure represents a strong shift towards moving applications to cloud for unlimited access, offering anything-as-a-service (Xaas), which is predicted to grow to $2.4bn by 2029 . As a result, there will be a push for cloud-native IT and a shift towards microservices-based architectures.?
This means more public cloud-based deployments for telecoms BSS/OSS, with an increase in microservices-based modules selling in the cloud.
Adaptive AI
An increase in the use of adaptive #AI will see more accurate data fuel better decision-making by operators, which, in return, will encourage quicker adaptability to ever-changing real-world circumstances.
The rise of the Ubernet
With the rise of IoT, AI technology, cloud adoption and global deployment of 5G, it’s safe to say that the world is moving towards ubiquitous connectivity.
The ‘Ubernet’ is a reference to the ‘the Internet of the future’ when every human being and every object in the world is represented on the web. This ‘future’ is said to be as soon as 2025, which means more needs to be done to ensure the lawful exchange of data that respects human rights, and this is where it’s not just a matter of companies but governments coming together for a true borderless and limitless internet.?
Building on this, as it’s clear that there is high demand for the #metaverse , telecoms should be making it a key focus in 2023. CSPs in particular will look to address how they can enable an environment to support the metaverse.?
Whilst many have already established #edgecloudcomputing capabilities to satisfy a number of other non-metaverse functions, the focus for 2023 will be to strengthen this capability and identify ways to work with hyperscalers, whilst also implementing the required cybersecurity protocols internally.?
Conclusion: Telcos must place CX and cybersecurity at the forefront
2023 is set to be a year of monumental transformation, with technology playing a key role in accelerating growth across a variety of sectors. As telcos look to trial and deploy new advancements in technology, it is clear that customer experience and engagement will be at the forefront.?
AI, metaverse, and borderless experiences, powered by 5G, will continue to gather steam, and network operators - more so than ever before - will be keen to position themselves at the heart of IoT innovation. Along with these advancements comes the increased concern for improved cybersecurity, which will also be a top priority for companies.?

Therefore, telcos embracing the change and prioritising upskilling/reskilling to meet the demand will be better positioned to unlock new business opportunities and win customers.
