A resume provides the hiring manager with his/her very first impression of you. A well-written one could be your ticket into an interview. Hence the importance of a resume can never be underestimated. So, to make the first impression, it is imperative that your resume stands out from the crowd. A resume speaks a great deal about you as a qualified candidate. It says what you have done in the past. What are you doing currently and where exactly you are heading towards?

A resume is a marketing tool. Through a well-written resume, you can sell the skills which you have accumulated over the years. A good resume should match your skills to the vacant position. This is exactly what recruiters need to know nowadays. They want to know in which way your skills will prove beneficial for their organization. And if your resume is successful in telling them so, the purpose is served. Companies are also using software that enables them to auto-pick the keywords they are looking for. Therefore, it is important that you go all out to ensure that you highlight your skills…the ones that match the job to increase your chances of standing out from the rest.

Here are 5 ways to get your resume noticed:

  • Choose the right resume template. A functional resume that prioritizes skills over work history is ideal. Do you have the skills listed in the job listing?…and can you eliminate the business's pain-point by not having a skilled candidate in that position? If you do, show me. • Don't write a generic resume that could work for any job. Customizing your resume to each job you apply to is critical if you want to prove that you're the right person for the job. Match keywords in the job description. Since you need to do this for every job you apply to, it’s best to keep one generic, resume on file that you can add relevant keywords to so that your original, generic version doesn’t get lost.
  • Clarify Your "Selling Points"…and the reasons you want the job in the ‘ABOUT ME’ section of the resume. Politicians coached in handling the media are always advised to have a maximum of three key messages to get across, which they should stick to and repeat throughout the hiring process. Similarly, it’s a good idea to have two or three key points that you want to make about what you have to offer and what you’re looking for – for example, ‘I’m ready for the challenge of managing a team, ‘I combine compliance experience with technical expertise, ‘in my career, I’ve developed an extensive digital transformation skillset’.
  • Think beyond your job duties in the Work History section. The best resumes highlight a job candidate's actions and results. Be factual…prove you have what they want…highlight at least three achievements for each job…use positive language…focus on your strengths. Let the hiring manager know what skills you have acquired through different jobs and how you are going to utilize them for the betterment of the prospective organization.
  • Keep your resume short and direct. The No. 1 rule of writing a resume is to keep it short and to the point. The general rule is no more than one page unless you have a very good reason for it to be longer.

The Importance of a Well-Structured Resume

Your resume allows you to create a first impression to your employer before they get the chance to meet you in person. So, do not be afraid to boast about your relevant achievements, skills and experiences. Be sure to include bullet points where necessary to make it easier for employers to identify these. Read through your resume over and over again and get a friend to read through it once more to ensure that it reads well and that there are no grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. A final bit of advice is to review and edit (if necessary) your resume for every job you apply for. While there will be employers requiring the same level of expertise from their new employee, some may have specific things that they are looking for. So, make sure that your resume is specifically targeted for each job.
