According to the 2018, Verizon DBIR report states that 58% of all attack malware attacks are small businesses. The reason is that Cyber criminals just like any criminals are equal opportunists. They don’t care if you are a small company or a large company, if the opportunity is there they will exploit for their gain. Small businesses are an easy target because they “I think I don't anything valuable ” that a cybercriminal will want
WRONG!
The fact that you are a small business means you don't have a security professional and/or you don't have a budget for security. Without these resources, small business presents more vulnerabilities that can be exploited by criminals. Some of these vulnerabilities where companies can be hit by Ransomware, where all your files are encrypted and you have to pay for “keys” to unlock your files. Your system could also be used to store tools that attackers use and/or attack other systems.
These exploits and attacks are expensive. In 2017, cyber attacks cost small and medium-sized businesses an average of $2,235,000 by Ponemon 2017 State of Cybersecurity in SMBs. Most small businesses won’t survive a breach like this.
We will continue on this journey together to start addressing various aspects of security that will help small to medium businesses be prepared, stay protected and reduce the impact of breaches. Stay tuned for more articles about how you can reach your security goals.
