Welcome to?The Israeli Startup Review, a curated newsletter where I share insights from thought leaders, news, and opportunities around Israel's tech ecosystem. Every week you’ll receive timely analysis from off-the-beaten-path, perspectives from the ecosystem, and selected opportunities to further engage with Israel, the Startup Nation.

I put together two gatherings while I was in Israel (the second one I co-hosted) so noodling on the idea of putting together an event in the coming weeks in New York. If there is interest on your part to attend respond to this email directly.

Rosh Hashanah: A time of renewal and unity ?by Rabbi Dr. Elie Abadie:?For those who are celebrating the Jewish New Year and attending synagogue I’m sure you’ll hear plenty of rabbi’s sermons on this-or-that political view, and maybe even be inspired during this challenging time for the world. Despite the messenger not always being a subject matter expert at times, there is some value in hearing a comforting message during this time.

But reading this article by Rabbi Abadie did resonate with me as he is living a true experience of bringing two peoples with a history of terrible animosity together. Being in Israel for the better part of a year during the pandemic it was easy to lose sight on the progress the country made on many fronts (I’ll cover the explosion of economic growth in a future issue), especially Israel’s relations with her neighbors. It is sometimes hard to see that, particularly given how sectarian violence in the streets during the last flare up in violence in Gaza had the country teetering on the edge. While I support the rabbi’s message about how far we have come in developing relationships with our new friends in the Gulf, let’s not discount the importance the Startup Nation miracle has had on those relations.

Rosh HaShana has traditionally been a time to press the reset button, but 2020 (and 2021 as long as COVID rages) have been years where we have to continue to innovate and create new professional opportunities. Basically, continuing to press the reset button over and over. With that, it’s important for our spiritual well-being to take a step back and appreciate how far we’ve come.
