57 days and counting!

On March 23rd, the Prime Minister of the UK announced a series of measures to try and curb the spread of COVID-19, by placing the country in LOCKDOWN!

For many, this has caused great turmoil, uncertainty and fear. Every-time we turn on the TV or computer, or open the pages of a newspaper, we are smacked with more headlines of further spread, more infections, and increased fatalities. Whilst we await the news the R number has remained below 1.

Millions furloughed, uncertain as to when and how they will return to work. Hundreds of thousands of others, financially struggling as the Chancellor attempts to manage the books whilst being seen to support those affected!

I'm not sure if you are a GLASS HALF EMPTY or more a GLASS HALF FULL type of person? But either way, we have been GIFTED an opportunity like the world has NEVER seen before...

TIME

The chance to slow down, take stock, review where we are in life. What path we have been following. To determine if this is leading us closer to that illusive UTOPIA we all seek, or if we have been chasing a pot of fools gold!

One of the conversations I am having several times a day at present, with more and more business owners calling to gain help and support in learning how to 'pivot', ' diversify', to do anything to survive the current downturn; is WHY?

Only then, is it worth either of us spending any time determining if your current line of attack, the current strategy, plan, mission is EVER likely to deliver that to you?

The trouble is (and the research heavily supports this) the majority (more than 85% of Business Owners) NEVER achieve what they set out to achieve! And the reason? - Because they didn't first set out with absolute clarity what that was! They have quickly become so embroiled in the day to day BUSYness of Business, they forgot to plan their exit! Resulting in working harder and harder for that illusive WIN, continually chasing a dream.

We've spent (myself and a team of 9 data analysts) over 4 years studying BIG BUSINESS FAILURE! To determine:

  1. What causes it?
  2. How to avoid it?

And we've uncovered 3 FLAWS within growing businesses, that subsequently lead to their demise. Furthermore, we then surveyed more than 100K Micro / SME Businesses, only to find at least 1 of the 3 FLAWS was already present in more than 80% of those who replied!!!

And with the current COVID situation as is, and the amount of funds used to try and prop up the economy, and business disruption this has caused, the financial uncertainty of the next few years will sadly be the canvas, on which MANY more businesses fall and die.

The data suggests something like 400,000 uk businesses will fold for every month that the lockdown persists unless they adapt to selling virtually. 150,000 of 600,000 IT Managed Service Providers (MSPs) will be out of business by the time the lockdown ends because they have no more than 2 month cash reserves and cannot furlough staff for fear of them leaving. The flip side of the coin is that this represents a huge opportunity for those who do survive, to expand and grow. One thing that must be said is that any company that makes it through this crisis and doesn't come out better trained, leaner. with better systems, better people, better management should be utterly ashamed of themselves.

Hi Jay; you make some interesting points and in terms of achieving success you are quite right. If we don't know what success looks like, sounds like and feels like it is difficult to achieve it or even target it. I have also found that business owners spend too much time with the day to day minutae of running the day-to-day issues rather than planning the future. To what extent do you believe that lack of innovation within a business can be a contributor towards failure Jay?
