When it comes to being a Business Analyst, the basic project process groups defined within the Project Management Body of Knowledge provide an excellent foundation upon which to visualize the objective. Beyond those, it is a simple as 5...4...3...2...1...go.
5. Context
The most important goal always is to understand the 'context' of what it is you are trying to accomplish. Who are we serving and why? Understanding the customer value proposition and/or the business need always comes first and provides the foundation for all other activity. Ask yourself what is the problem you are trying to solve or the opportunity you are trying to capture.
4. Requirements
With this understood, we can delve into the change gap analysis by mapping out the change required. What, when and where are the requirements that solve the problem or satisfy the opportunity and how do they relate to the current state? This involves understanding the change that is required to get from where the business is at today and where it needs to be in the future.
3. Solutions
After defining this, solutions can be analyzed #how and developed that satisfy the requirements. Throughout the process, understand how traceability plays a role. Think SMART. Solutions should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Bound. Always remember that a solution that fails to drive value to the end customer is probably not worth delivering.
4. Execution
Once you figure out the solution, it is time to execute. Visualize the outcome and understand what it will take to get there. Think Agile in that the best solutions are delivered in stages. Think Big - Execute Agile. Constantly ask yourself...Are we in focus? Are we on track? What can we do right now to get there.
5. Reflect
It is always a great idea to look back at your Analysis and execution and find the good and the bad. #lessonslearned What went well and what didn’t? How can we make continuous improvements so the next project is better?
