I've gained acres of experience in my 2 years as an entrepreneur, and I will continue to learn and gain experience. No one. I repeat NO ONE, starts their business and has everything figured out. It just doesn't happen.
So in the interest of my continuing education in entrepreneurship I reached out to the people in my network on LinkedIn to get the #1 piece of advice they'd give for starting a business today.
I received great advice from all sorts of different professionals, business people and entrepreneurs. Below I share these advices.
Please share this with your network hopefully it can help them in their business endeavours.

- Begin with an exit in mind. Create systems, establish processes, and hire competent employees.
- Don't just build a business - build relationships with your employees, clients, suppliers and everyone that you deal with on a daily basis.
- Keep clean records all the time.
- Make yourself replaceable. This way, you can maximize your company's value and you won't end up leaving money on the table by the time you decide to exit from your business.
Jo Ferreday - Founder of Sheer Edge - LinkedIn Profile
- Keep going, when it feels like you're not getting anywhere there is always a sign to prove you're doing the right thing.
- Make sure you have a plan from day one, not just your cash flow forecast but a plan of where you are aiming to be in years 1, 2, 3 and beyond.
- Keep your mind open to feedback. Always, always keep your customers at the heart of what you do.
Mike Johnson - Writer, Entrepreneur, Early retirement Expert - LinkedIn Profile
Don't start a business at all. Buy an already-existing, proven business or income property that pencil out with more monthly, passive income than your personal monthly bills. Now you're free of jobs and work schedules forever.
Mathias Maimann - Partner at Crunch IT ApS - LinkedIn Profile
Partner up with people not like yourself. Partners with another life perspective, experience, even living in a whole other "reality" will cause conflicts.
Conflicts will cause arguments, counter-arguments, realizations, compromises, clever decisions and a strong result.
Phil Durrant - Simple DSEAR Compliance - LinkedIn Profile
- Start as you mean to go on.
- Build systems from day 1 so that as the business grows the systems help the business run when you're not there. Imagine you're going to franchise the business.
- If going into business with a business partner, write down the basis of the relationship in terms of whom does what and % shares and reward etc.
Gaurang Gahoi - Food and Beverage Professional - LinkedIn Profile
- Learn Finance, Marketing and Operations before getting or diving into business. This will give you a great deal of confidence in knowing how to get the above three components right as they are key to success in any business.
- It's easier to establish how to get help if you are not sure about those three components but before that, having knowledge of all at a level which helps you align your strategies will be great benefit. Don't try to do it yourself, find a business coach.
Emily Coltman - Chief Accountant - LinkedIn Profile
- Get your books in order from Day -1. Every time you spend money on your business keep the receipt because it could save you tax!
- Create a filing system to organize your papers.
- Get a separate business bank account because it'll be so much easier to keep your business and personal finances apart if you do that.
- Register your business with HMRC - and get yourself a good bookkeeping system and, 9 times out of 10, get yourself a good accountant and make sure they speak plain English!
Shelley Audra Ann - Automotive Specialist - LinkedIn Profile
- ROI (Return on Investment) is the focus! Get in the habit of asking for feedback on everything, from everyone.
