#517: The Art of the Mentor

Introduction

Finding a mentor is a fantastic way to foster your own personal development and maximise continuous learning. According to The Leadership Odyssey, a Harvard Business Review, many leaders underestimate the extent of change required and need the help of a sponsor, mentor, or coach. In fact, many celebrities have publicly discussed the impact their mentors had on their success, including Christian Dior, Richard Branson, and Oprah Winfrey.

To give you a good understanding of what mentoring is, we've put together a selection of 10 videos that will show you just how you can benefit as either a mentor or mentee.

Being a mentor is a lot like being a parent. When your child does something that you couldn't do, or maybe they do something better than you, you don’t say “how dare you, I am your creator!” (and then push them over). Instead, you look at your kid with a sense of pride and accomplishment. You get that little tear or a twinkle in your eye and you say, "I'm proud of you." This should be the mentality and belief inside of our organizations when we think of coaching and mentoring our people. This is what great leaders do.

What foundations do I need to start building now, so that 15 years from now, whatever crises were to come, whatever good opportunities were to come, I'm putting some seeds in now. It's only sitting down with someone who's 15, 20, 30 years further on down the path that you can kno...

09. "Everyone Is a Mentor" from Jack Welch

Jack Welch was at the helm of GE from 1981-2001. Jack says that mentoring was the "worst idea, ever", but I think he means that about mentoring from a single person.
