OpenAI to fund four Axios Local newsrooms as part of a broader partnership focused on “juicing local news”
OpenAI and Axios announced that they have partnered and that OpenAI will fund four new Axios Local newsrooms, “enabled by our technology,” in Pittsburgh, Pa.; Kansas City, Mo.; Boulder, Colo.; and Huntsville, Ala. The launches will bring Axios’s total number of local newsrooms to 34.
OpenAI has entwined itself with 19 news publishers and organizations from the AP and The Atlantic to Le Monde and Spain’s Prisa Media to the American Journalism Project and Lenfest Institute. Now, for the first time, the company is directly funding newsrooms (Source: Nieman Lab)
Google Inks deal with the Associated Press to bring more real-time info to Gemini
In a bid to make its Gemini chatbot app more of a one-stop shop, Google says it’s working with The Associated Press to build “a feed of real-time information” in Gemini. Jaffer Zaidi, Google’s VP of global news partnerships, said that the goal is to ‘further enhance the usefulness of results’ in the Gemini experience.?(Source: Tech Crunch)
Apple suspends AI-generated news alert service after BBC complaint
Apple is suspending an artificial intelligence feature that made inaccurate summaries of news headlines, branded with the logos of BBC and New York Times. Apple had previously said it would update, rather than suspend, the feature. False notices claimed, among others, that tennis player Rafael Nadal had “come out” as gay (BBC) and?that Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, had been arrested (New York Times). Dotdash Meredith to lay off 143 people
Dotdash Meredith, one of the largest media publishers in the U.S. (People, Better Homes & Gardens, Food & Wine), is laying off 143 people, CEO Neil Vogel said in an employee memo obtained by Axios. The cuts are meant to position the company to invest in growth areas, Vogel said. (Source: Axios)
Meta to cut 5% of staff based on performance
Meta notified employees Tuesday that it plans to lay off the lowest-performing 5% of its staff, or roughly 3,600 people. It's the third round of major layoffs at Meta in the past three years. (Source: Axios)

TikTok restores service in US after Trump vowed to delay ban
US President-elect says the order would give the company an extra 90 days to find a buyer and suggests that the US take a 50% stake. Before Trump’s move, Axios reported that TikTok went dark and disappeared from app stores for a day. TikTok's 170 million users started receiving a "services temporarily unavailable" notice late Saturday night and the app was no longer available in Google and Apple's app stores as a law to ban the app was set to take official effect at midnight. It's the first time the U.S. has banned a major online platform of this scale. (Source: The Guardian)
Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp offers Prince Harry a “substantial” settlement to avoid a trial over his tabloids’ reporting behaviour
Among the executives allegedly involved in that coverup is Will Lewis, now the CEO and publisher of The Washington Post. Lewis was a top Murdoch executive in the U.K. 14 years ago when a scandal over the tabloids’ hacking into people’s voicemails reached a fever pitch. He is not a defendant in the case and has denied all wrongdoing. (Source: NPR)
