"500 Year Weather Events" all too common...

The Old Hemp is just finishing up a delightful meal of corn, potato soup and tomatoes courtesy of Lee Crabtree's farm in Readyville Tennessee. We have been blessed with a boutiful harvest so far this season. And that was what this post was suppose to be about but others this morning aren't so fortunate, a scant 100 miles west of us in Humphreys, County Farmers and folks got rocked with another "500 Year Event" that has resulted in 10 dead and 40 missing. In a 24 hour period, 17.02 inches of rain fell on McEwen, Tennessee and wreaked devastation that will takes weeks to unravel and will scar folks for the rest of their lives. This area is dominated by agriculture and it's easy to say at this point entire crops were lost along with countless fine folks that were in the wrong place at the wrong time, through no fault of their own. A scant 10 years about 17 inches of rain fell on the city of Nashville, Tennessee. That natural disaster was suppose to have been a "500 Year Event" and yet 10 years later and 70 miles down the road, we have another "500 Year Event" that will turn out to be far more deadly than anything the people and officials could have imagined. But you can't prepare for things that aren't suppose to happen your lifetime. If you have rainfall of 17 inches every decade in the same area, it is no longer a "Weather event" it has become the norm. Under this scenario in Middle Tennessee, there are relatively no areas safe from flooding. The Old Hemp Farmer doesn't want go into the root causes of these weather related disasters but something is going on and we probably should be spending a lot more time on figuring out what is happening. At Tennessee Homegrown we know that we dodged a bullet and are quite thankful because although we have received huge amounts of rain, we have been able to cope with the conditions. The Old Hemp Farmer doesn't do this too often but on this Sunday, if you have some extra positive energy, prayers, mantras or money please send it to the folks in Humphreys county, Tennessee. Anyway, Hemp Dawgs and Hemp Puppies keep one eye on the weather and the other eye on the market.
