500 DAYS ALCOHOL-FREE

Over the next few weeks in the build-up to the launch of my book “WALKING BACK TO HAPPINESS - THE SECRET TO ALCOHOL-FREE LIVING & WELL-BEING”, to be published in June 2022, I will be sharing transcripts offering insights into the life changing experiences I encountered on my first year of going alcohol-free.

MY CALENDAR ON THE FRIDGE

Yesterday I celebrated 500 Days alcohol-free. The days seem to have just whizzed by. It feels like only yesterday that I was starting out and, in a flash, I am almost 18 months down the road.

One of the things I learnt early on in my AF adventure is the power of journalling.

A journal captures what I am thinking: my hopes, fears, beliefs, values, purpose, goals and dreams. It is a powerful reminder of how far I have come. When I read the entries, I can see how I am evolving and growing. The most important thing a journal gives me, above everything else, is accountability.

As well as the diaries, I also categorise my wall calendar as a form of journaling.?

On Day One I printed off an A4 calendar with the whole year on one page, so I could cross off the days with a big cross as I journeyed to Day 365 an.

This wall calendar is strategically placed on the fridge door – the old gateway to ice cold booze. This was where all the alcoholic ‘goodies’ such as cold wine and beer, as well as the ice cubes for that nightcap used to hang out.

This messy piece of paper became central to my journey, a daily reminder of my success, of how far I had come. Each cross is a loaded reminder of the cravings that I had conquered in the early days and the happiness I have achieved.

Each day, the first thing I do on entering the kitchen is to put a cross in the box for that day making it a form of self-fulfilling prophecy that I have already achieved the day without alcohol.

It all sounds so simple, but do not, at all costs, underestimate the power of one of these wall calendars and the magic of a number.
