TL;DR

My take on the AI news from last week.

AI is everywhere?

If Artificial intelligence is not a new discipline, being around since the 1950s , OpenAI managed to make it ubiquitous in just a few months following the launch of chatGPT back in November 2023.?Now, there is not one day where you don't come across an article assessing its potential on anything including healthcare, software testing, but also sporting events like Wimbledon which will offer AI-generated commentary this year , or even... beer brewing ?

By the way, now even the people paid to train AI are outsourcing their work to AI . Fascinating new behaviours, don't you agree?

AI + India

Unarguably, India has had an outstanding week: their PM enjoying no less than 15 standing ovations when he addressed the US congress, the US announced a range of strategic deals with India including in the AI space, Google investing $10B in an Indian digitisation fund, Microsoft exploring AI use cases, and IBM confirming Indian businesses are now focusing on AI-first.

On a slightly less positive note, over 12,000 chatGPT accounts from India were leaked on the dark web. Also, seriously, who designed THAT t-shirt? ;)

AI Tools & LLMs

We’ve seen a plethora of noteworthy updates from the leading AI-powered solutions like ElevenLabs launching their Voice Library, Midjourney and their new, frankly mind blowing ‘zoom out’ feature, and Stability AI (the company behind Stable Diffusion) launching SDXL 0.9 which will allow for much better image and composition detail.

Leading video hosting websites are also jumping the AI bandwagon with YouTube helping creators to dub their videos in different languages and Vimeo launching a script generator.

Dropbox is aiming to become the Google search of the corporate world with their AI-powered universal search, 'Dropbox Dash'.

Last but not least, 美国哈佛商学院 released their own chatbot to teach their flagship coding course, 微软 released 'Orca' a 13 billion parameter-powered AI model, and Inflection AI debuts its own foundation AI model to rival 谷歌 and OpenAI Large Language Models (MMLs).

AI + Media Industry

I am a movie/tv series buff, so I’ve always followed closely the convergence of tech/innovation and the movie business. Arguably, Marvel Entertainment might have pulled the best marketing stunt in recent times by leveraging AI to create the opening credits of 'Secret Invasion', the new Marvel series which kicks off the phase 5 of the MCU. The sheer amount of UGC from angry creators protesting on behalf of the graphic designers and animators community was gignormous... nevertheless, like Oscar Wilde famously said, “the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about”.

Staying in the media industry for a minute, the Grammy Awards will follow a strict AI guidelines next year, and Sony Music Entertainment acknowledge the importance of AI by appointing their very first EVP, Artificial Intelligence.
