BUSINESS MODELS & PERFORMANCE

Publishers expect to have new revenue streams from AI licencing and new product development

Reuters Institute predicts what will change in the media business in 2025, based on publishers’ survey responses. On the business side, almost four in ten (36%) of commercial publishers expect licensing income from tech and AI companies to be a significant revenue stream – twice as many as last year. More widely, subscription and membership remain the biggest revenue focus (77%) for publishers, ahead of both display (69%) and native advertising (59%). With subscription growth slowing, new product development is set to be a more important priority in the year ahead. More than a quarter of our publisher respondents say they are actively thinking about or planning to launch new products around games (29%) or education (26%) with one-fifth (20%) looking to launch an international or foreign language version. Many of these new products are likely to be bundled into ‘all-access’ subscriptions in a bid to reduce churn. At the same time, more than four in ten (42%) say they’ll be looking to launch or trial a ‘youth’ product this year. (Source: Reuters Institute)

TikTok pushes users to Lemon8 as ban looms

TikTok's sister app Lemon8 has been sponsoring posts on TikTok encouraging users to migrate to Lemon8 amid a looming ban threat, according to sponsored posts viewed by Axios. The TikTok ban law, taking effect on January 19, also applies to other apps owned by TikTok's Chinese parent ByteDance, like Lemon8. Axios suspects ByteDance could be betting that regulators and app store companies are so focused on TikTok that they won't pay attention to its other apps. (Source: Axios)
