50 Challenges For 50 Years - Inspired By Cancer Heroes

Here at Britannic, we're all about putting our heart and soul into everything we do, especially when it comes to giving back. To us, being socially responsible isn't just a box to tick; it's woven into who we are. We get that every company, big or small, can really make a difference in the world and that’s why each of us at Britannic is given an annual volunteering day to support causes close to our hearts. We're not just about the bottom line; we're about supporting the communities that support us. And no one embodies this spirit more than our CEO, Jonathan Sharp. His latest project, a book titled "50 Challenges for 50 Years," is a perfect example of our commitment in action.

Approaching his 50th birthday, Jonathan found himself contemplating a meaningful way to celebrate this milestone. Inspired by his parents' battle and victory over cancer, he decided to undertake 50 challenges to raise funds for cancer research, a cause close to his heart. This initiative was not only about personal growth or achieving a remarkable physical feat; it was about leveraging his position and network to make a substantial difference in the fight against cancer.

The challenges Jonathan undertook were as diverse as they were demanding. From cycling 187 miles to Paris from his home here in the UK, walking over 100 miles across the South Downs in eight stages, participating in a chilli eating competition, to the physically and mentally daunting task of completing the three peaks challenge in the UK, Jonathan pushed his limits. Each challenge was a step towards a larger goal. The most arduous for Jonathan was the three peaks challenge, not just for its physical demands but because it forced him to confront his fear of heights in severe weather conditions, making it an emotionally charged experience.

What makes Jonathan's journey truly inspiring is not just the breadth of the challenges he undertook but the spirit in which he approached them. He reached out to his LinkedIn network, inviting ideas and fostering a sense of community around his mission. This approach reflects a crucial aspect of CSR: engaging and uniting a community towards a common goal. The varied and sometimes bizarre suggestions that came through not only added to the diversity of the challenges but also deepened the sense of collective effort and support.

Jonathan's experiences throughout the year were enriched by the stories of those he met along the way, from family and friends who supported him to strangers inspired by his quest. This network of support was crucial, offering motivation during the toughest times and reminding him of the significant cause at the heart of his challenges. The endeavour was not without its obstacles, but Jonathan's resilience and the collective encouragement from his network helped him navigate these challenges.

The decision to compile these experiences into a book, "50 Challenges for 50 Years," was driven by a desire share this incredible journey, to inspire others, and to further contribute to cancer research. With all proceeds from every book sold going to charity, Jonathan's initiative has already raised significant funds for this vital cause.

Jonathan's story is a powerful example of how personal commitment to giving back can align with and enhance a company's CSR efforts. At Britannic, we believe that our responsibility extends beyond our immediate business interests to encompass a broader commitment to societal welfare. Jonathan's journey and the publication of his book are not just achievements to be celebrated but are reflective of the values that Britannic stands for.

Through "50 Challenges for 50 Years," Jonathan has not only contributed financially to #cancerresearch but has also set a precedent for how personal and corporate social responsibilities can intertwine to create a significant impact. This initiative underscores the importance of #CSR to us at Britannic and reinforces why giving back to the community is at the heart of everything we do. It serves as a reminder that our actions, no matter how small they may seem, can ripple out to effect meaningful change, embodying the true spirit of #corporatesocialresponsibility.
