1. Using Flash
Several years ago Flash suddenly broke into web design industry and captivated a big percentage of websites all over the world. But nowadays Flash is literally dying: all Apple devices automatically block any flash elements on websites, and so does Google Chrome. So if you don't change Flash to HTML 5 as soon as possible - none will be able to see your video and animated content!
2. Hidden navigation
Or a "Hamburger menu" as it is called. The point is in hiding a list of navigation buttons under one general button. This trend appeared due to the needs of mobile users where this is the only way not to cover useful content with navigation field. But somehow "Hamburger menu" started to spread on desktop versions of sites too, which is absolutely unnecessary and can even spoil User Experience a lot. So just don't do that??
3. Background videos
We have already discussed this very popular trend and pointed that even though videos on the background look beautiful and stylish, they awfully distract site visitors from useful content and don't let them concentrate on target action. Moreover, videos increase page load time which is also bad as not all site visitors are patient. So you better follow the example of big brands like PayPal and use simple picture as a background on your site.
4. Intrusive Pop-ups
Pop-ups are a great instrument of communication with users but if they are too intrusive - people will not like it. It was proven that pop-ups are the most effective when they appear at the moment user wants to leave the page. It is better not to show pop-ups right after opening the page though. And always remember: pop-ups must be intuitive and SOLVE PEOPLE`S PROBLEMS!
5. Too much stock photos
We know that you want your site to look beautiful. And we know that there are lots of extremely beautiful professional photos on photo stocks. But when a person comes to your site, he wants to see something unique, something different from others. That's why it is better to use your own pictures and photos on your site.
