5 Ways To Spot a Narcissist in 2023

So you're convinced that you're with a Narcissist?

Before you start throwing the term around willy nilly, and accusing them of being a Narcissist because they act like the life of a party - it's important to get your facts straight.

No one wants to be called a Narcissist.

Since working in the space of Narcissistic Abuse, I have worked with so many survivors of real narcissistic abuse. Those who come to me stating that their spouse, mother in law or even friend is unbearable to be around, has traumatised them beyond belief.

Being confined to their home, unable to leave, secretly making contact with someone who will just listen, the narcissist showing no love or empathy, financially abuse, and being emotionally manipulated by their partner. Gaslighted so badly that they believe that if they even try to leave their partner, that they will be unable to live on their own.

So what are some surefire ways to spot a Narcissist?

  1. Constant Selfies and Look at Me pictures

This one is a surefire red flag. This is also not dissing those people who use selfies or work, business or promotion - but is more of a 'look at me' type of picture. Constant kissy photos, duck lips, hot body pictures, promiscuous photos for attention, naked photos of themselves on their phone... may sound ridiculous but it does happen. And it is a red flag.

2. Every Conversation is about them

Did you hear about what happened to them? The new girlfriend they have? The house they just bought? What they did for work? They talk off your ear all about themselves, but when it comes to you, your story, thoughts or even opinion don't matter. They will always turn the conversation back to themselves. There is a lot of boasting and bragging about themselves or their accomplishments.

3. Lacking Empathy

In general, most people have some empathy. This is the ability to listen and hear something someone has to say and feel for them. Empathy can also include love. Those who are Narcissistic are generally incapable of expressing or feeling love.

Remorse? Don't expect that from them either.

4. Isolation from Friends or Family

This is a huge red flag, if the person you are with is beginning to isolate you from your friends and family. I remember once dating a Narcissist who tried to convince me that no one liked me or wanted to hang out with me. It took approximately 3 months for me to cut everyone off, because I believed no one wanted to be around me.

5. Constantly Hiding Phone Suspiciously

Are they already controlling your finances? This isn't the 'let's put together a budget so we don't spend so much' or 'lets put a plan in place' this is:

"Are you buying XYZ again?"

"How much did you spend this week?"

Or putting a hold on your bank account or credit cards so you can't spend and only giving you an allowance that you can spend. Buying things for themselves when they want to, but not allowing you the same privileges.
