5 ways for a simple and adaptive change

I love this quote by Franklin Roosevelt who had said:

“Be sincere, be brief, be seated”.

One of my guiding principles with change is to keep it simple, and succinct. Especially when we have to make sense of complex change.

Change is continuous and fast paced. We can almost get lost, head over heels, trying to keep up. So keeping it simple, to the point and adaptive may seem counter intuitive. The organizational benefit of doing so however, is that you get the commitment, the motivation and the flexibility to achieve the outcomes you set out.

Here are my thoughts on how to make simple, adaptive change work:

  • Use a simple change management process and approach.?Formal frameworks are great but they are also complex. For small and simple change iterations, you can perfectly make do with something like Plan, Execute, Sustain.
  • Use collective thinking on problem solving and solution design. Involve those that will be impacted by the changes. Collectively come up with solutions. Break projects down into small iterative steps working towards the end goal.
  • Keep goals manageable and achievable, review them regularly and ensure they are still consistent with the bigger picture. Re-iterate them with 'just enough' dedicated time, and resources.
  • Challenge previous organizational beliefs and assumptions. Just because something is currently done in a particular way, doesn't mean it has to continue this way. Technology advancements, changing social norms and the like enable new organizational ways of working.
  • Review and continuously refresh organizational knowledge, enhance skills and cross-skill people across the organization, minimizing risks of outdated knowledge or losing a vital part of intellectual property.
