5 Ways to Prove That Your Social Media Marketing Position Has Value
Social media marketing positions are on the rise! Jobs were created for people like you and me thanks to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more! Some organizations are still hesitant when it comes to investing in their platforms because they don’t believe that social media is true marketing. It takes a lot of thought and strategic planning when creating content. It’s not just selfies, office pictures, and boomerang videos. So how do you prove that you add value to the marketing team? Maybe you’re looking for a raise. Maybe you’re trying to demonstrate how important it is for your organization to invest more into your platforms. Maybe you want them to invest in your training. If you’re feeling like you’re in a position where your work isn’t valued, I’ve created these 5 tips to help you prove that your social media presence is important and is worth every penny that’s invested into it.
1.) Show them some stats!
There are plenty of articles and websites that provide data on the growing social media communities so use them! Find articles that validate your point and help you demonstrate how social media is influencing its users. Sites like Ambassador and Smart Insites help provide stats that will blow your bosses mind. For instance, did you know that 90% of social media users use social media to communicate with brands/businesses? There are over 3.48 billion social media users in the world. Do the math! Social media is becoming the main source of communication between businesses and consumers. Especially if you buy a bowl from Chipotle, they forget to add the chips and guacamole that you requested in your online order, and you can’t go back because the store is too far away so you use twitter to complain and they send you two coupons for a free bowl for the inconvenience *takes a deep breath* Moving on….
2.) Do things their way, initially
Maybe you’re working with an organization that is afraid to step outside of their normal routine and they don’t believe that change will help increase their social media presence. Building trust between you and your organization is the most important step in this kind of situation. Social media is daunting to some and many fear that one wrong move could spark a marketing crisis. My advice is to be patient, work slowly, and prove yourself. Adapt to their way of doing things, take the time to learn their brand, and slowly start to incorporate your ideas as time goes on. They hired you for a reason! Believe in yourself and execute. Once you prove yourself, your team will see the value in your position and the strategies you create.
3.) Grow their network (duh)
Put your digital marketing skills to work! You’re talented and you know what you’re doing! Get to work and grow their audience. Stay up to date on the latest updates and algorithm changes. Be innovative and come up with new energetic ideas to increase your company’s audience.
4.) Collect testimonies that describe the influence that social media has on your audience
Find a few clients that actually use social media as a resource. Get them to testify about social media and how it’s influenced their decisions. Bonus points if they are your target consumers. You can meet people in person, talk to them in their private messages, or get access to a list of customers that have already been served. If you’re someone that has to go above and beyond, I’d even create a few videos. Show your team that the proof is in the pudding!
5.) Find businesses that do similar work or have similar clients
Find other organizations that are in the same boat as you. Use them as examples if they have a thriving and successful social media presence. Reach out to them and ask for advice when it comes to creating a successful platform. One of my favorite things to do is to reach out to other social media gurus and exchange ideas. Most times, people are happy to help and share their experience in this digital marketing world. I almost always find new ways to successfully increase engagement when I work with others.
Hopefully this helps! I truly believe social media is becoming the best marketing resource (other than direct face-to-face marketing). 2.1 Billion people across the globe have a social media account. Chances are that your audience is in there somewhere! Comment below and let me know what you think!
