LinkedIn has been deemed the online resume site for many since its existence well over 20 years ago. The constant debate over its relevance for networking and relationship building in comparison to Facebook is never-ending. Many are not aware that Linkedin was established before Facebook. Therefore, it is the granddaddy of social networking via the internet.
The last 6 months I have been looking for ways to activate my LinkedIn superpowers so that I can fully engage my audience of former coworkers, friends, and associates that I have met and worked with over the years. I am going to share with you the top 5 social media strategies that have turned my LinkedIn page to a major lead generator.

5. Engage
If you want to be successful on social media you have to learn how to be social. It is a must that you play nice with the people you are trying to grow, build and learn from. By paying attention to what your peers' post, discuss and share- you are opening yourself up to do the most valuable thing a human can do which is build relationships.
4. Post
Not only do you need to engage people with their posts but you need to add value to their timelines as well. Share articles that you’ve found while sprinkling a sample of your opinion and advice with it. Feel free to share the posts that your fellow LinkedIn family have already written and or shared and highlight your supportive spirit.
3. Hashtags
Hashtags are as important to social media as an address is to a GPS device. Whew, that was a good one and I am HORRIBLE with analogies. Hashtags help people find you and also serve as a guide to help those with similar interest, find you. Hashtags bring people together. If you have a hard time highlighting what you should hashtag, think about your words in a way that allows you to see what is really important. I’ll give my very favorite example below.
“I am Jessica LaShawn , founder of the award-winning nonprofit Mogul Academy. I focus on teaching urban youth between the ages of 6-18 the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, civic engagement, financial literacy, and leadership. “
How would I find hashtags for such an amazing paragraph you ask. EASY! Just read it again and tell me what words do you think people will be most interested in.

Did you figure it out?
Here is the answer. I know you did a great job but I want to make the world a better place by proving to you that you got it right and build your confidence.
This is what you should've come up with…
“I am Jessica LaShawn , #founder of the #awardwinning #nonprofit #MogulAcademy. I focus on #teaching #urban #youth between the ages of 6-18 the #fundamentals of #entrepreneurship, #civic #engagement, #financial #literacy and #leadership. “
2. Alerts
Facebook and LinkedIn are a blessing because they give you a pool of people to communicate with daily that are open to communication. LinkedIn tells you when it is someone's birthday when they list a promotion or a new job and when they have other major milestones within their life and or career. Use this opportunity to reach out and establish a relationship, reconnect and build. Congratulate them and attempt to start a conversation. Social media only works when you are actually social!
1. Recommend
This last tip is the most underutilized game changer there is on this platform. Many are not aware of the impact that a recommendation has on someone's page. It also adds value to your page as well. If you want to build, support others and grow together, use this feature for people that have really left an amazing mark on your life within the work world. Let us be great together by reminding people of the influence they've had by bragging on how they were an amazing example for you and others. There is no better feeling than reading how someone was touched by you and your talents.
