5 Ways Leaders Can Boost Performance

Are you ready to transform yourself and your organization in real time?

Data shows that before you can transform your organization, you have to transform yourself as a leader. In fact, 90 percent of CEOs agree that organizational change starts with personal change.

Here are 5 ways to transform your team:

1. Change Your Instincts

One of the biggest challenges most leaders face is changing their instincts. These are the habits and decision-making patterns that have served you well in the past but may not be suitable for today’s unpredictable workplace. To overcome these instinctive choices, you need to be aware of them and consciously choose to act differently. You need to operate with purpose and not on autopilot.

2. Use a Simple Framework

The authors of "Real-Time Leadership," David Noble and Carol Kaufman, have developed a simple yet powerful framework that consists of three dimensions: external, internal, and interpersonal.

  • External: Goals and aspirations related to achievement and competitive pressures.
  • Internal: Personal challenges and goals, including values, standards, and emotional regulation.
  • Interpersonal: The impact and influence you have on others, helping them achieve their goals.

To apply this framework, ask yourself three questions:

  1. What does a win look like?
  2. Am I being the person I want to be?
  3. Am I leading the way others need me to lead?

By considering these dimensions and asking these key questions, you gain valuable insights into the challenges ahead and how to tackle them effectively. Avoid relying on outdated solutions for new problems. The people and expectations have changed, and so must your approach.

For example, if you want to grow your YouTube channel from 100 to 2,000 subscribers:

  • External: Aim to gain 1,900 new subscribers.
  • Internal: Ensure your content aligns with your passion for leadership and personal development.
  • Interpersonal: Provide valuable content that resonates with your audience's current challenges.

3. Ask Transformative Questions:

  • Clarify Goals: Determine what a win looks like for each challenge or goal.
  • Self-Reflection: Assess if you are being the person you want to be, ensuring alignment with your values and standards.
  • Evaluate Leadership Impact: Consider if you are leading in a way that meets the needs of others and fosters their growth.

4. Operate with Purpose:

  • Avoid Autopilot: Make conscious, purposeful decisions rather than relying on instinctive, habitual responses.
  • Purpose-Driven Actions: Ensure that your actions align with your long-term goals and the values of your organization.

5. Adapt to Changing Expectations:

  • Acknowledge Evolving Needs: Recognize that today’s workplace and its challenges are different from the past, requiring new approaches and solutions.
  • Continuous Improvement: Regularly assess and update your strategies to stay relevant and effective in a dynamic environment.

Using this framework helps you transform yourself by focusing on outward goals, internal passions, and meaningful connections with others. This approach is essential for navigating today’s complex and evolving workplace.
